After our busy, fun filled morning, we were just about able to join in with some of the fun of 'World book day'. We changed into our costumes and our classroom was full of Princess', Superheros, Dinosaurs and lots more favourite word-associated outfits!

We had some rather excited children coming into the classroom this morning....the day was here...our long awaited trip to the fire station had arrived!
We firstly boarded the coach, where the children were all safely strapped in and ready for their very first class trip! When the coach arrived at the Fire Station, we pulled into the yard and were greeted by Neil, one of the full-time Firefighters at Ipswich East. We all sensibly got off the coach and gathered in the truck bay, where we split into 2 groups. One group went into the mess area, where 2 Firemen (Neil and Aaron) spoke to us about what their job involves, such as the types of incident they have to attend and some of the things they have to do at the scene. They also showed us and talked us through all the different items of uniform they have to wear and how it all protects them. Aaron told us that they have to have EVERY part of their skin covered to protect it from the fire and heat. Neil and Aaron also spoke to us about smoke alarms and how important it is to have them in our houses. The second group had stayed in the truck bay to look at the Fire Engines and the equipment they use, which Pete and Stuart. They talked us through some of their equipment they use at different incidents, such as the different hoses, ladders, lights and 'jaws of life'. They also sat in the back of the Fire Engine, and went out into the yard to stand in the 'cage' of the Alp (Aerial Ladder Platform), before watching it move up rather high in the air....this is what the Fire Service use to rescue people in tall buildings. The 2 groups then swapped over. We later rejoined as one group and all had the opportunity to have a go with the hose and squirt some water! The FireFighters have given all the children the task of finding out if they have a smoke alarm(s) in their house and where they are located. If you do not currently have a smoke alarm fitted in your home....then please call 01473 260588 to ask about the Fire Service coming to fit one for you. OR....speak to Miss Rushbrooke who can speak to her partner Adam, who is also a Firefighter. We have been very lucky with today's visit....as a rule, schools don't usually visit Fire Stations (Fire Services go to the schools) but Miss Rushbrooke's partner Adam, was able to organise a visit for us! Thank you Adam! We all REALLY enjoyed our visit to the Fire Station this morning, and would like to say a big THANK YOU to all the crew at Ipswich East Station....(as we did with the Police Service, we will be making a Thank you card to give to them). We would also like to thank both Lucas' Mum and Alexis' Mum for volunteering to help. .....and a final WELL DONE to all the children for being on their best behaviour, and showing great listening skills! we were very impressed and very proud....as were the Firefighters! Take a look at the photos from our morning.... Wow! What a brilliant, exciting and informative Morning Reception class had today!
We were lucky enough to have Joshua's Mummy and Daddy, who are both Police Officers, come into visit us, along with one of their colleagues, Percy. First of all, they spoke to us about what their job role involves, and the different ways in which they help us. They also showed us some of the equipment they use, such as their handcuffs and batons, which we got to have a close look at, and their walkie-talkies - a lady in the control room even spoke to us all over it! We also got the opportunity to try on their vests and hats and ask them lots of questions. We then split into 2 groups..... half of us went outside to have a look around the Police car and Police van, and try on some more of their uniform, and the other half of the class stayed inside and had our fingerprints taken to make our very own keyrings! We then swapped over so we all got the chance to do both activities. We all learnt alot about the different ways in which the Police help us, and REALLY enjoyed our morning! A big THANK YOU to Joshua's Mummy and Daddy and Percy for coming into visit us! Take a look at the photos from our Morning.... Unfortunately, this years 'World Book Day' falls on the same day as we will be visiting the Fire Station!
It has been agreed that on the day (Wednesday 6th March), Reception children will come to school in their school uniform, but may bring clothes to change into after lunch. The theme the school is following this year is to dress up as your favourite word.....this can be anything! ....or can even be as simple as 'Superhero', 'Princess', 'Pink', 'Green' etc! If the children would just prefer to come in their own clothes. (not a word) this is fine too! Many thanks On days when we have P.E, if the weather is fine, Mr Childs will always try to take the children out for their lesson on the school field or playground. Therefore could you please ensure your child has either plimsoles or trainers in their PE bags. We do keep some spare pairs in the classroom, but not enough for everyone.
Many thanks for your co-operation. This morning's assembly was our 'Super Learning Gems' assembly. Each class teacher was tasked with the tough job of deciding which children in their class deserved each learning gem....and believe me...it was tough to pick just 1 winner for each gem.....there were lots of worthy candidates!
All the children have worked really hard and are very deserving of their awards. There is one more 'Super learning gem' assembly coming up in the year, so there is still time for the children to receive one! Here are the winners in class Hughes....Well done! For today's cooking, we had a Valentines theme. We made Love heart Jam tarts.
Mrs Rushbrooke kindly pre-made us some pastry, and then we rolled out with a rolling pin. We then pushed the pastry into the tin, and put some jam in the middle with a teaspoon....it was rather sticky! We then cut out a love heart with a cookie cutter out of the left over pastry, and added this to the top of our jam tarts. The it was time for them to go on the oven to cook..... Thank you to Alex and Mrs Rushbrooke for helping us to cook today. This week, as you may of heard and seen, we have been making Chinese laterns and lucky money parcels, hearing about the story behind the animals of Chinese New Year, finding out which year of animal we were each born in, using chopsticks and bowls with the playdough, having a go at writing Chinese numbers and symbols, colouring in picture of the animals from the story, trying on traditional Chinese clothes, listening and dancing to traditional Chinese music, and of course, tasting some Chinese food!....phew, what a week!
The children appear to of really enjoyed our 'Chinese New Year' week....in fact they have asked if we can keep the activities out next week! We used today's cooking session to try a selection of Chinese food. We were lucky enough to taste some noodles, rice, wantons, spring rolls, prawn toast and of course prawn crackers! Even those of us who weren't too sure tasted some...and ended up loving it! Our classroom smelt rather like a Chinese restaurant!
Thank you to Mrs Rushbrooke and Alex for cooking out Chinese feast! Here are some photos of some of the activities we will be engaging in next week to celebrate Chinese New Year... the year of the 'Pig'.
We will also be trying some chinese food, hearing the story behind the animals of the chinese new year, and making some 'Lucky red envelopes'......watch this space for photos! |
