Here is a picture of the children enjoying April's company.
Last week we had a visit from Emily's Auntie April from America. The children had all written questions to ask her and loved hearing her stories. The children were very keen to learn about a different country and life in America. They were so well behaved!

I would like to welcome all of the new children and parents to year 1. What a busy first week the children had! They were busy learning the new routines and settling in.
We started our new topics in both literacy and science. This half term we are learning about 'our senses and our bodies'. We used our senses to explore the fizzy lime play dough which fizzed and foamed everywhere. We look forward to showing pictures, blogs and work that we complete over the term. What a lovely, albeit hot, day at foxburrow farm! Armstrong and nightingale classes had a great trip and thoroughly enjoyed all the activities. We had a busy morning- All the children had a great time pond dipping- The children particularly enjoyed looking at the newts, but we found a huge number of mini beasts living in the pond. We then found out more about bees and the job they do, abd the importance of nectar and pollination. The children learnt about the 'waggle dance' bees do and had a go themselves to direct their team mates to flowers in a special nectar collection bee game! The children found out about similarities and differences between flowers and went on a flower hunt. They discovered that most flowers are brightly coloured to attract bees. Then it was time for lunch and a rest in the shade! In the afternoon the children played a 'caterpillar hunt' game and discovered the importance of camouflage. They played a seed game and found out all about the things a seed needed to grow into a plant and the dangers a seed faced, including being eaten by a bird! Lastly the children went on a mini beast hunt in the woods. They were fascinated by the number of different creatures they could find- especially the giant slugs. A lovely day had by all! Thank you to the parents who came along and helped. Here are a few pictures from the day. We have had a great week learning about victorian seasides. We have tried Hokey Pokey's (ice creams), had a special visitor who talked to us about seaside's in the past, made Punch ad Judy shows and found a mystery suitacse full of old seaside aretfacts.
Last week we were learning to tell the time, we are getting very clever at recognising o'clock, half past and even quarter past and quarter to! Take a look at some of the work we have been doing!
The children wanted to share the song they learnt in music last week. We learnt about different types of reggae music. We used the instruments to tap along to the beat. This afternoon in Design and Technology the children made models of their favourite playground equipment. We spent a long time planning our designs, thinking about what materials we could use to make them strong. We talked about visiting a playground and made a pictogram of our favourite items of playground equipment. The children talked about what each piece of equipment was made of and what age range it would be suitable for. The children used wood, cardboard, wool, tape and straws to join there constructions together....Here they are!
Clay: 3D. Henry and the pebbles, the children responded to the story of Henry the pebble, his sister Beatrice and their Uncles, Arthur and George. We developed an understanding of lots of techniques, rolling, squeezing and rubbing while Henry went on his adventure. We finished with designing our own tiles, we made impressions in the clay using lots of different objects. The children loved getting messy! Textiles. Wrapping and Knotting. Using colourful fabric strips, ribbon, string and wool, the children were given two pieces of wooden doweling. Using knotting and wrapping techniques, the children made pretty hangings and frames. Textiles. Fabric hangings. Embellishing fabric with Brusho (dye). Carrying on from the previous textile session lesson, the children decorated the fabric with primary colours. The children enjoyed watching as the fabric absorbed the dye and sometimes mixed to make a secondary colours. They look fantastic! In literacy we have been learning about Rapunzel VS Tangled and looking at the similaraties and differences. We linked out numeracy, capacity to this topic and decided to make a potion to trick the wicked witch. We carefully measured out the ingredients using millilitres. Take a look at the pictures of our disgusting potions! |
