We have started to use a new phonic programme. You will find a piece of homework and a book for them to read. Please record the reading of this booklet on Go Read. Thank you.

The children have enjoyed using hoops for the past two weeks. In history they have been learning about the toys that Victorian children used and they were surprised to see how children back then used hoops!
The children have settled into life as Year 1's. They have enjoyed using the classroom and the continuous provision areas inside and out.
They have already been very busy carrying out science experiments on biscuits and in math sorting objects showing their understanding of using a ten frame. We had great fun completing our DT unit of fruit kebabs. We built up our research, design, practical and evaluating skills in the unit before making our very own tasty fruit kebabs.
We thought carefully about our own design processes and what fruit we wanted to be on our kebabs and why. It was good to learn about healthy fruits and know the importance of good health. We got to try lots of delicious fruits as well! We focused on using the bridge and claw grips to help us cut and prepare the fruit safely. At the end we thought carefully about our finished product and whether it met the design criteria and evaluated our likes and dislikes. In RE this half term we have been learning about Judaism. We have learnt about the place where Jewish people go to worship- the synagogue. We then thought about the different areas and parts of a synagogue. We have also been thinking about ‘Tefillah ’or prayer in Judaism and how Jewish people would visit the synagogue to pray to their God and learn more about their religion. We got to learn about how Jewish people like to help others and those in need and how they use a Tzedakah box to help and give to others. We designed our own boxes and thought about what good, charitable things we can do today. We even had a go at writing the word tzedakah in Hebrew on our box designs. We thought about a time where Jewish people give thanks and have a 2 week period of Sukkot Sukkot were the huts in which the Jewish people lived during their years in the desert after they left slavery in Egypt and before they arrived in the Promised Land (Israel). We then designed our own Sukkahs. Our theme this half term is castles. We started by discussing what we already knew and wrote questions about what we would like to find out.
We have been thinking about the purpose of a castle and have labelled and drawn the different parts. We enjoyed reading a story called the 'Paper Bag Princess' and have thought about the princesses feelings at different parts. Afterwards. we discussed why the story wasn't a traditional fairy tale. We took a virtual tour of Edinburgh Castle with Barnaby Bear and then linked our writing to it, thinking about using words with 'ed' on the end. (One of the spelling and grammar skills we have been learning) Earhart have been enjoying our role play costumes and completing rainbow challenges to build a castle using the construction equipment and make a crown fit for a king and queen. At the end of lockdown we started our new topic of seasons. We have been thinking about the weather in each season and observing the changes. In our science lesson this week, we thought about packing a suitcase to go on holiday. We had to choose a destination and then thought about suitable things we would need to pack to suit the weather. The children enjoyed choosing a holiday trip and did some super thinking about what they would need. |
