| I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. Since returning from the Christmas break the children have been very keen to tell us about all of the presents they have received. Today we had our show and tell session, the children showed their object and talked about. It was lovely to see so many children confidently talking about their toys and taking it in turns to talk. I was super impressed with how well the children listened to each other. This week we have started our new topic of 'Africa' Our book focus for the beginning of the term is Handa's Surprise, If you would like to listen to the story at home click the link below. |

Thank you to everyone who made it along to our Christmas craft afternoon yesterday. It was great to see so many of you! Don't forget that at the Christmas fayre on Thursday we will be selling some of our craft items. We have already been thinking about how much each item will cost and in maths the children have been recognising the correct coins that people will need to use to pay. Salt dough snowmen £1.50 Baulbles £1 Reindeer Food £1 We will also have hot chocolate on sale (£1) and a game (20p a go) for you to enjoy. A great end to a busy week! Today we have been pretending that we were bakers just like Thomas Farynor. This week and next week we are looking at instructions, ensuring that we follow them carefully, include bossy verbs and time connectives. The children worked in groups to read and follow a set of instructions on how to make bread. The children measured, kneaded and shaped carefully and the bread smelt lovely (and tasted very crusty).
Thank you to Miss Rushbrooke for helping today. Today the children had the opportunity to really relive life in 1666 with our Great Fire of London Day. They looked fantastic and great effort had been put into their outfits. We started the day with a visit from Annie, she is from a theatre group and helped us re-enact the great fire using drama & dance. The children could show off with how much they knew about the event, Annie was very impressed. This afternoon the children had a go at writing their names will a quill, just like Samuel Pepys. This afternoon we also made Great Fire of London pictures using tissue paper and black card. We thought about the background colors and tried make silhouettes of the buildings. They look very effective on our display. I hope the children have enjoyed the day, thanks for all of the effort with their outfits.
The children had a fantastic visit from the firemen today. They helped us re-create the Great Fire by burning our Tudor houses. We put the houses close together and the wind was blowing which helped our houses burn quickly. We sang London's Burning and talked about fire safety. The firemen kept us very safe. Afterwards the children got to spray the fireman's hose and sit in the back of the fire engine. Lots of fun had by all! As we continue our learning on The Great Fire of London we begin to look at the houses and how they were built. In DT we have had a go at recreating a Tudor house. The children carefully constructed, cut, joined and decorated them, thinking about the wooden beams. We had an exciting literacy lesson on Monday when Mr Southerwood rang to tell us he had found a box on the field which had Samuel Pepys name on. He thought we may like to see it as we have been learning about the Great Fire of London. We found the box buried under some leaves and took it back to the classroom to find out what was inside. The children were excited to find some cheese and wine! We tasted the cheese while we continued our learning about Samuel Pepys. For Children In Need today the children made different vegetables into superhero's. They looked fantastic, all very imaginative. We talked about where our money will go and how it will help other children.
Well done to Sunny who was the winner in our class. For our class fundraiser we used our coins to see if we could cover Pudsey up. I think the class did a pretty good job. Well done MacArthur class! As you know we have started our new topic of The Great Fire Of London. The children have already been very absorbed in their learning. This week we have been making pictures of the fire on the computers in ICT, using our role play area to act it out and read our class text to find out more about the event. In literacy we have been tea staining paper ready to write diary entries on. Just like Samuel Pepys. In music we have been learning a rhyme called 'London's Burning', video below. Just another reminder about our Great Fire Of London Day on the 1st of December where the children can dress up representing the time of the Great Fire. Our learning today has been about fireworks and the Gunpowder plot. We looked at why we celebrate Guy Fawkes and how some people planned to use gunpowder to blow up the houses of parliament. Luckily the plan didn't happen and the king was saved. We started our day by ordering the gunpowder events and then designed our own fireworks. We thought about what colour they would be and what noises they would make.
This afternoon in art we made firework pastel pictures and used paints and pipe cleaners to make a firework display. The children have produced some lovely work. For those of you who couldn't attend our maths afternoon I have attached the PowerPoint that was discussed. We talked through how we teach the different methods in year I and had a go at applying these methods to some activities. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to come and see me.
