The children have used the reflective gem today.
We have been learning about Judaism in R.E. and today were enquiring into the word 'holy' and considering this is the context of the well-known bible Moses and the burning bush. Here are some examples of the children's work as they reflected on the lesson and questions relating to the use of the word holy.

In geography, we have learnt about where in the world the Alps are and the countries they are in. We then looked at how the Alps were formed by the movement of tectonic plates pushing up and creating fold mountains. We learnt about the weather in the Alps, that it can be extremally cold and hot and that there is a lot of precipitation, resulting in either a lot of rain or snow - dependent on the time of year.
We also learnt about some of the industries in the Alps, mainly focusing on tourism. We learnt about avalanches and how to stay safe. For our big finish, the children created power point presentations to show some of their learning. The children used the cooperation and creativity gems today. In our biography writing the children have been learning about Steve Irwin.
They have worked hard on their basic punctuation, such as capital letters and full stops, that their sentences made sense and using commas for clauses. They learnt about chronology in biographies, how they are always written in past tense, in third person and how to structure the information in paragraphs. Some of the grammar covered over this unit of writing were relative clauses, FANBOYS and conjunctions. This is the first piece of published work in Year 5 and some of the children are still developing how to read and edit their final work for minor errors. In geography today the children have learnt about the kinds of things that are considered when building a house in Suffolk. The children thought of things such as the cold and insulating, the materials used, such as bricks and wood, solar panels, heating and many other things and designed a house.
We then learnt about the climate in the Alps and learnt that the temperature can be -10 degrees in the winter and about 30 degrees in the summer. Whilst we discussed that our country can at times be hot, it is not often as hot as 30 degrees and that typically the coldest we would expect it to be in our part of the country is about -4 degrees. However, there is an awful lot of snow in the Alps and it rains a lot more than it does in this country. The children looked at their design and then considered what they might change to suit living in the Alps. They changed things such as more heating, insulating, stilts to raise the house off the ground and even windscreen wiper-type devices to clear snow off solar panels! Finally, we looked at traditional Alpine houses and how they are built inside the mountain-side, have animals on the ground floor, whilst the living area is above this - as heat rises. Their roofs are steeply sloped to enable snow to slide off, as well as a large over-hang on the roof and shutters for the windows. The children used the creative and cooperation gems today. In writing we have been completing some research on Steve Irwin. The children are preparing to write their own biographies about Steve Irwin and were seeing what else they could discover about him. They have found that Steve was frightened of parrots, he had a snail and a snapping turtle named after him. That Steve was inspired by David Attenborough and that he and his wife never wore rings in case wearing them hurt the animals they were handling. Irwin was born on his mother's birthday. His final words were, "I'm dying." Plus many more interesting things. The children used the cooperation gem today
Half of the class are for this term doing ICT with Mr Edwards. In this unit of work the children are learning and developing their skills in Scratch. The children are using the perseverance and creative gem.
Half of the class have bee learning how to play guitars with Mr Butcher. They have been learning about rhythms and beats and even begun composing some of their own material.
In today's science lesson, the children have been out on the field making the solar system mainly out of fruit, measuring the spaces between planets with toilet paper!
Using the fruit has helped the children to see the difference in the sizes of the planets, with Jupiter being represented by a water melon and the Earth with a cherry tomato, etc. Following on from making our loo roll and fruit solar system, the children then had to draw the planets in the solar system to show they understood the sizes of the planets in relation to each other and the sun. They have used the Adventurous, Co-operation and Creativity gems for this activity. In art, the children have continued to develop their drawing skills. Using an artichoke thistle as inspiration of the natural form, they had to imagine what might be inside. The children used their drawing skills such as hatching, stippling, dashes, etc to create these drawings. Then, in the last lesson, the children recreated their images in an enlarged form and then used pastels to add colour, again using the same mark-making techniques. The children have used the creative gem.
Today, the children were introduced to the Solar System and began by reading statements around the room and asking each other questions.
Then, we looked at the names of the planets and the order of them. The children used the adventurous, cooperation and creative gems today. |
