In R.E. the children have been continuing to learn about the Islamic faith. We have been learning about the 'reveal' and the 'revelation'. In today's lesson, the children have been learning about following rules as written in the Qur'an and following the words of Allah. One of the things that the Qur'an teaches Muslims, is that they must give to charity in order to feel richer themselves. The children spent a short while reflecting on this and then recorded some ideas about this as they wished in their books.

In geography the children have been learning about Journeys. They have been learning that things like their food and clothing can come from all around the world and be imported to our country. For our Big Finish for geography, the children had to research an item and find out how it is grown or made and describe how it comes to be sold in our country. Here are some excerpts of some of the children's work. Great use of these Learning Gems:
In the last half term we looked at another biography unit and the children researched their own British, female scientist. Over this unit the children worked on grammar such as chronology, sustaining third person, conjunctions and past tense. The children also learnt about present perfect tense using the verbs has and have (where an action happened in the past, but continues to happen today) and the past perfect tense using the verb had (things that happened a long time in the past but continued to happen in the near past. They also looked again at relative clauses and subordinate clauses and how to punctuate them and writing in a formal tone. They also completed their own research in brief notes to support their final piece of writing.
Here are some examples of their final work. In science today we have been learning about solids, liquids and gases. The children then had great fun making and exploring non-Newtonian fluid which is a rule-breaker, being both a liquid and solid.

In science today the children have been 'mixing it up!' The children have learnt that a solute and solvent can mix together to become a solution. In this science investigation, the children had to work together to decide if each material was soluble or insoluble. The materials they investigated were salt, lemon juice, sand, vegetable oil and flour.
The children worked out that salt and lemon juice were soluble and mixed together to make a solution, and that sand and oil were not soluble. Flour had some of the children uncertain. So, we put some flour into some water and stirred it and left it. After several minutes, the flour had all settled in the bottom of the beaker, showing that it was not soluble. In science today, and because it is science week, we began an investigation on how things decay.
We began by learning about what decay is. Then, the children made predictions on which items would decay first. We have used a potato, a slice of bread, an apple, some plastic and some biodegradable plastic. We have placed these in four different conditions; normal conditions, a cold condition, a moist condition and an oxygen-proof condition. We are going to investigate these each week for the next month to see what happens. To finish our maths unit off on properties of shape, the children had the 3D shapes out and had a recap on vertices, edges and faces. We have now moved onto our new unit of maths - position and direction.
We have today begun our new geography unit on journeys. This children explored where their school uniform and things from the school kitchen come from. The children used the atlases to find the countries and labelled them on their own maps.
