We began our first science topic this afternoon - Electrifying. We started with a few quick tasks, reigniting the children's knowledge of electricity from the work they did in Year 4 as well as when they used it in their Sky Ships in Year 5; they had a go at a quiz which prompted lots of discussion, especially about what an insulator is, followed by a vocabulary sort. Following this, the children worked in groups, using the equipment provided, to make a bulb light up in a circuit. We then looked at the symbols that should be used in a circuit diagram and drew diagrams to match the circuit that had been made. Then the children were given a range of other equipment in order to make different circuits, drawing circuit diagrams to match them.

Today Key Stage Two were introduced to their Jigsaw Friends. We will be using these in our new PSHE lessons.
We will also being using the Jigsaw Charter.
As part of our STEM lessons, we are using TinkerCAD. This week everyone got an opportunity to go to the computer room to explore this piece of software. First they experimented with changing the size of a cube, tried looking at their work plane at different angles and then began working on making a maze. good use of this learning gem:We have been reading The Invisible by Tom Percival. In the book Isabel tries to see the beauty in everything and is grateful for even the smallest things. We thought about what we are grateful for and filled our own gratitude jar. we looked closely at the characters featured in the story ‘The Invisible’ and imagined what it was like for them - putting ourselves into their shoes. Good use of these Learning Gems:This week we started our Mystery Book Club. Mystery Book Club is when Mrs Matthews wraps up a book she has especially selected for each group to read. We've been seeing the packages on the table since last week, so have been dying to find out what was inside! Today we found out and got to unwrap them!! Our first Mystery Book club was a great success! We were all excited to unwrap and start reading our first book. Everyone was engrossed in reading their books and were keen to talk about what they had read. Good use of these Learning Gems:To start the new school year, all classes are carrying out a biscuit dunking investigation. We had the focus of whether the amount of sugar in a biscuit made any difference to the number of times it could be dunked. Prediction: During our discussion, a lot of children thought it actually had nothing to do with the amount of sugar but more to do with the thickness of the biscuit (Year 5 are carrying out this investigation so we are looking forward to finding out their results). Carrying out the investigation: Through using a branching key, we identified this type of investigation would be a fair testing one and so we had to make sure only one thing was changed (the type of biscuit) and everything else was kept the same e.g. the amount of water in the cup, the temperature of the water, the amount the biscuit was dunked in the water. The children carried out their investigation sensibly, working well with their partners to not only dunk the biscuits and then count and record their results in a table. Conclusion: After drawing a scatter graph, the children came to the conclusion that the amount of sugar in a biscuit didn't really have anything to do with the number of times it could be dunked. They still wondered if it had something to do with the thickness but from doing this investigation they also wondered if it had something to do with what was in the biscuits as the chocolate chip ones seemed to be able to be dunked the most and they were the only ones which had 'pieces' in them. Great use of these learning gems:Today was our first day in Year 6 and we had a Book Cafe in class where we had the chance to look at a range of books from five different genres and find some books we are keen to read. It was great fun and nice to see the selection we have in the class library. We transformed the classroom into a Book Cafe, complete with candles and music. Here we all are enjoying the menu of different books! Once we had looked at all of the books and reviewed some of them, we selected one from our five favourites which we would like to read and recreated the front cover. It was a lovely way to spend the morning: feasting on books! Great use of these Learning Gems:The Mandela TeamWe are all excited to welcome you back to school to be part of our Y6 class!
Here's what the classroom looks like: We can wait to see you!
