Today saw the third group of six children perform their poems to the rest of the class. In Mandela Class we are lucky enough to have Mr Harvey work with us to help a different group (each half term) to learn a poem off by heart and recite it to the rest of the class. This is a skill, which is not only part of the Year 6 expectations for reading, but is also a life skill which prepares the children for High School and beyond. It always amazes me how all different types of children respond to the task and the change which occurs in their confidence and ability in just 6 weeks. They all performed really well, even Mr Harvey who performed his own choice of poem to the class. Well done everyone!

Well done to all the 7 children who have achieved this term's Learning Gem Awards.
It was so difficult to choose as we have all worked so hard on the Learning Gems again this term! After a busy week of Mock SATS we had fun playing the game Bananagrams! It's a great word building game and we are looking forward to having our own class competition to find out who is our 'Top Banana' later in the term!
We have been working hard, to apply the skills learnt and the knowledge acquired from studying different artists, to create a colourful wall hanging. We are very pleased with the results. Dip Dying the FabricDesigning the Wall HangingThe Finished Results:Great use of these Learning Gems:For our Textiles Unit in Art we have been studying the artwork of artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. We focused on his use of bold colour, perspective, line and shape. We will be using this artwork to influence us when creating textile wall hangings. After collecting ideas in our sketch books and drafting out a rough sketch we are now using felt tips and colouring pencils to create pictures in his distinctive style. Good use of this Learning Gem:Over the last few days we have been putting ourselves in the shoes of the South African ANC members during the time of apartheid and writing protest speeches. Our mission was to persuade ordinary South Africans to support the anti-apartheid movement and help abolish segregation. We have worked hard to include a range of Literary devices to persuade the listener including: emotive language; weasel words; dare to disagree expressions; rhetorical questions; short and snappy phrases as well as longer complex sentences. It was great fun to stand up on our chairs and read our speeches to each other. Everyone really got involved, giving an emotive speeches. Well done!
Good use of these Learning Gems:We have been working really hard in Y6 to demonstrate our mathematical thinking. Explaining how we used the calculation methods to solve word problems and solving problems and explaining our thinking and solutions to others. Here are some examples of us explaining the short division (or bus stop method).
Here we are solving problems and working out solutions: Here we are explaining our findings to each other: Good use of this Learning Gem:Today was Mrs Matthews' Reading Raffle assembly - there are many books to win, if you read 5 times a week! Our Y6 winner was very pleased with her choice.
Our current Science topic is 'Staying Alive'. Today we measured our lung capacity: using a 5 litre water bottle and pipe, we filled our lungs full of air and blew out, using water displacement to work out in cm3 how much air we could hold in our lungs. It was fun, but very wet!! We discovered that Matilda and Rebecca had the largest lung capacity - 13cm3 and Reece the smallest - 4cm3. The average lung capacity was 9cm3 Good use of this learning Gem: |
