In Guided Reading today we have been creating leaflets for the public, warning them all about the dangers of the Bluchers. The Bluchers are deadly plants destroying the city in our class book ‘Boy in the Tower’ by Polly Ho-Yen. We used our retrieval skills to find out more about the plants: what they look like; how they are dangerous for the public and what they feed on. |

We have been practicing for our Bananagrams Competition in a few weeks time by having some mini competitions this week. The winners will be playing each other to see who is our overall Bananagrams expert so far.... This will all help towards getting ready for the real competition to find out who is our Top Banana 🍌 as well as helping improve our vocabulary and spelling skills. It is also great fun! Here are some of the winners! Good use of the perseverance gem!![]() Today was a belated World Book Day for TSM (due to the snow last week). We all dressed up as our favourite book characters and in the afternoon Mandela and Branson classes got together to read to each other. Also we invited parents in to take part in a whole class guided reading lesson, where we introduced our parents to this term's class book 'The Boy in the Tower' by Polly Ho-Yen. Here are just a few of our fantastic costumes. Can you guess which stories these characters come from? Good use of the co-operation Gem!We have been using DADWAVERS! to help us improve and structure our narrative writing. The idea is to try and start each sentence in a different way. We watched the animation 'Broken - Rock, Paper, Scissors' and had a go at using DADWAVERS! to help us structure our writing by retelling the story through a comic strip or a graphic novel. After writing a first draft and editing our work, the results were fantastic! Here are just a few examples: Good use of the independence and creativity gems!We have been working hard to use the learning gems to solve Maths problems. We worked hard to solve this problem: We worked hard to explain our thinking to each other. Good use of the concentration, adventurous, perseverance, reflective and cooperation gems!Today children and staff came into school wearing their sports gear. The afternoon was spent doing fitness circuits, all of which were sponsored and finished with an inspirational talk by the Olympic swimmer Joe Roebuck. Mandela class worked really hard! Good use of the perseverance gem!Today we have been working on our debating skills. As we have come to the end of our non-fiction text work (all linked to Nelson Mandela) we decided to use the knowledge we have gained about his life, as well as the discussion/persuasive skills we have been learning, to help us debate: Does Nelson Mandela deserve to be our class representative? Our groups were picked randomly, as was whether we were For or Against. It was great fun and really showed how confident we have become using persuasive/discussion skills and technical vocabulary linked to the topic. There was lots of jeering and cheering too, as there should be with any good debate!! A lovely end to a really enjoyable Literacy topic and an impressive half term in terms of progress and confidence with language 😊 Well done everyone 😊 And incase you were wondering Mandela is still going to be our class name!
Today saw the next six children perform their poems to the rest of the class. In Mandela Class we are lucky enough to have Mr Harvey work with us to help a different group (each half term) to learn a poem off by heart and recite it to the rest of the class. This is a skill, which is not only part of the Year 6 expectations for reading, but is also a life skill which prepares the children for High School and beyond. It always amazes me how all different types of children respond to the task and the change which occurs in their confidence and ability in just 6 weeks. Well done to the third group!
We have had an exciting package arrive last week - our own Bananagrams competition kit! After half term we will be having a competition to find our school’s best player (our top banana) and we could be in with a chance of winning £1000 for our school. This week we had a go at playing this brilliant word building game in class, we all really enjoyed playing it and are looking forward to our competition.
