Parents - you would be surprised how many children enjoyed eating mushrooms!!
In Science we are studying 'Classifying Critters' - all about classifying living things into the 5 kingdoms. So far we have found out about Plants, Animals and Bacteria and today we learnt about Fungi. We explored the most recognised form of fungi - the mushroom! Mrs Matthews brought in lots of different types of mushrooms for us to draw and look at. Afterwards Mrs Gillings and Mrs Calver cooked them so we could all have a taste. There were mixed reactions - but it was a fun afternoon :-) Parents - you would be surprised how many children enjoyed eating mushrooms!!

Today we have been working on our Art unit based on 3D artwork. We have been looking at the work of Henry Moore, a sculpture and painter, who has produced to brilliant semi-abstract sculptures of people, including the 'Reclining Man' and 'Mother and Child'. Today we responded to his work by creating our own clay reclining figure sculptures.
It Literacy we are starting to plan our extended writing task - a chronological report book written especially for Lower Key Stage Two children, telling them all about the life of Nelson Mandela. Today we looked at a WAGOLL (What a good one looks like) and planned our own success criteria, drawing on what we have learnt so far about writing reports.
Last week in Science we worked in pairs to create some classification keys to help year one identify bugs on the school field. Today we got to show them and use them on the field. It was great fun and the Year One children really enjoyed our keys. They said they were easy to understand and use. Great teamwork at TSM!
In Science we are looking at Classifying Critters. We have been investigating branching keys, looking at ways of sorting animals into different categories. It can be quite tricky! We started off by classifying ourselves on the playground and then we had a go at classifying different animals in groups of 3. Thinking about different characteristics and using yes and no questions.
Thank you to all the parents who came to 'Meet the Teacher' on Thursday after school. It's a chance to not only meet me, but also find out about the expectations for Year 6 and ask any questions.
As promised here are the apps I suggested may help with Maths and should make learning spellings a little easier in Key Stage 2. They are a range of apps called Squeebles and are created by 'KeyStageFun' who create exciting, colourful, educational games for children on the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Mac and Android (including Amazon’s Kindle Fire devices). For any parents who were unable to attend, the information received has been sent home and if you go to the Mandela Class Page on this website you can download the PowerPoint presentation shown to those who attended. Any questions please speak to me. Mrs Matthews Our first full week in Mandela Class and we have been learning all about the man himself...Nelson Mandela. Finding out about his amazing life and how he changed the lives of the South African people forever.
Photos and more blog posts to follow (once all the parents have completed the photo permission forms!) Goodbye to you all. We all hope you have a fantastic summer and a bright future at your new high school.
Today after school we had a great leaver's party. We had a water fight and played in the pool and then had a BBQ and disco. Thank you to all the adults who helped, including Mr Matthews who did the BBQ! Over the last few weeks we have been rehearsing and getting ready for our production of 'Alice in Wonderland'. Today was our dress rehearsal for Key Stage One and we were brilliant!! Tomorrow we have an afternoon and evening show. |
