No doubt a number of children in the school received a tablet, smart phone or laptop from Santa this year. They may have also asked you to sign them up to XBox live or something similar! Now you may think you've sussed the security settings and double checked that your child is using the internet appropriately, and that may well be that case, however, as a school we want to ensure we repeat that message and make sure children know how to be safe when 'on-line' a term that no longer just means going on the internet but opening an APP that is using the internet to share information. Mrs Campbell is in the process of preparing activities for Safer Internet Day on the 9th February but I've given you a link below if you feel you need to up-skill a little! On Monday, I went for my yearly E Safety update training and I thought I pretty much knew what the latest trends were... but... it appears that children this day are always one step ahead when it comes to APPS and new technology. As adults we may need to play catch up. Feel free to attend - they are free. The first two days have passed but there are plenty more sessions available. ![]()
It has been brought to my attention that the dinner staff are struggling to get the children through for school lunch within the current time frame 12-1pm. Therefore on some occasions this week children were still eating their lunch at 1:10pm and some were rushed whilst eating.
This has come about because of a number of reasons…
Once the warmer weather arrives (who knows when?), the additional space in the hall plus the extra capacity in the picnic area will ensure that the children get through even quicker. I will monitor this over the next few weeks to make sure there is an improvement, if not we may use the KS1 area to seat some pack lunches, freeing up additional space in the hall. Watch this space! Do you dream of playing quidditch, concocting potions and shopping in Diagon Alley? Are you awaiting the day a special letter will arrive welcoming you to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Then come join us to celebrate all things Harry Potter on Thursday 4th February!
The train leaves Platform 9¾ (aka Felixstowe Library) at 6pm and there will then commence an evening of storytelling and magical activities as we celebrate everybody's favourite boy wizard. Have a go at making potions, be sorted into a house, choose a wand (or maybe it will choose you), make some traditional wizarding refreshments and much much more. We'll be joined by characters from the books and you are invited to wear your best robes for the occasion. This is the second year that Bloomsbury Publishers have invited groups to hold Harry Potter Book Night celebrations and this year your local Book Festival and Library were determined not to miss out on the fun! We will be transforming the library and opening it especially for this event. Tickets are available from Felixstowe Library and cost £5. The event will run from 6-8pm and is recommended for ages 7+ with all children accompanied by an adult (not required to have a ticket themselves and we will allow entry to muggles). You may want to bring some money to spend in Diagon Alley. Please visit www.felixstowebookfestival.co.uk, ring 01394 694880 or send an owl to Felixstowe Library for more info. Tonight the choir sang at the Kirton Church Carol Service. They sand two songs unaccompanied and were fantastic. Well done to the choir and thank you to Mr Lewis Lloyd and Mrs Matthews for supporting the choir.
Children were allowed to wear a Christmas jumper or a festive t-shirt today - all they had to do was bring in a tin for the local food bank.
This is a very busy time of year for the food bank and so we felt that if we could all bring in at least one tin, then that 192 tins more than they would have had. The children looked super smart in their Christmas jumpers. Thank you to everyone who contributed too! This morning we were all treated to an excellent Carol Concert from the children in the school choir. They performed about 12 songs altogether and their voices sounded absolutely amazing. Mrs Ross, Mrs MacFarlane and Mrs Matthews read a story, or a poem and so too did I. We finished with the 12 days of Christmas and a medley of Christmas songs. Thank you to Mr Lewis Lloyd for the work he has carried out with the Choir and for Mrs Wilson who was a star on the piano. Thank you also to the parents of the children in the choir who came along to watch the concert. An brilliant morning! I am now feeling 'Christmassy'. The choir will also be performing at the Kirton Church this coming Sunday. Thank you to all of you who came along to the Christmas Fete. I know the staff, the School Association and the children put a lot of time and energy in to making this happen so it was excellent to see so many people turn up and part with their hard earned cash for the items made by the children.
The money raised by each class will go into their own pots of money. We've said to the children that the money is theirs to spend e.g. if they feel they would like more wet play games or if they want to have Viking come in to do some work with them they can choose to use some or all of their money towards it. We want children to learn the value of money and start early in helping then to make decisions about how to spend it. We've already discussed why using it to buy sweets for the whole class may need to be reconsidered. Enterprise skills are important. Some of our children may go on to achieve degrees and go in to particular professions. However, there will be a number of children who will enter the world of commerce or even decide to set up their own business. I've already seen children who show a particular talent for this just from last nights fete. Thank you to the staff, pupil, parents and the school association for making today a huge success. The Christmas Lunch was a great success today! The pupils sat in their classes to have their festive lunch and served drinks by their class teachers and support staff. The Christmas tunes were playing and the children had a lovely time! Thank you to the kitchen staff for managing to feed the children their Christmas dinner which was in fact double the amount normally catered for on an average day.
Whilst class teachers prepared their classrooms for todays Enterprise afternoon, pupils were treated to a guitar presentation from the year 5 and year 6 children. They shared some of the warm ups they do in order to get ready for their guitar playing and then shared some of the songs they have been learning. It was fantastic see hear what the children have been learning and although it is expensive to have whole school guitar tuition, we feel it is extremely important for our children to have the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument. Thank you to the music teacher, Mr Butcher and to Mr Lewis Lloyd, who supports the children during their guitar lessons.
