The Ultimate Spelling Bee Final took place today and was truly amazing! Some of the challenges today included spelling 5 words in a row continuously, counting the letters in 5 spellings, spelling words backwards and recalling as many of the words from the children's spelling list as possible.
All of the children did amazingly well and it was a very close competition. 1st Josh (Yr2) 2nd Robbie (Yr6) 3rd James (Yr3) A superb final this morning!
The children were amazing! I'm still shocked at how good they are at the BACK SPELL round. Children in Year 2 able to spell words like 'massive' backwards. Excellent. Well done to todays winners. Year 2 - Ted & Josh Year 1 - Stanley Just to finish off what had already been an excellent afternoon… a group of children from Year 3,4,5 and 6 competed in the Parlauf Relays competition at Langer Primary Academy after school today and did us proud! This event is totally about the WHOLE team, every child contributed to the overall results. It was a tough event but what impressed me most what the determination and commitment shown through the entire event by our children. There were also a few trips and a few mishaps but the children picked themselves up and continued to work hard for their team. Before the results, I had said to the children that I was so impressed with their attitude and whatever the result we should be proud of ourselves, considering we were the second smallest school in the competition and we were a few children short due to illness. However, when the results were announced… We were the winners! It was a close competition and Kingsfleet and Causton weren’t far behind us but we were very pleased to lift the trophy. Langer were great hosts and the event ran very smoothly! We now need to get our name on that trophy! Well done to all who ran (for what felt like a lifetime!) and represented their school superbly and thank you to the parents and carers helped ferry the children from school to the venue. Myself and Mrs Matthews were very proud indeed. Job well done!
During todays RE curriculum afternoon each class found out about a particular celebration connected to the religions the children are currently studying in class. The children learnt about a celebration, the traditions surrounding that celebration, the purpose and in some cases they re enacted parts of the celebration to experience it first hand. As promised I did wear my Hindu outfit and had a great time teaching the Reception Class some super Bhangra dancing ready for Diwali. The whole purpose of the afternoon was to bring R.E. to life. Hopefully children will remember the activities they completed today in years to come as well as developing a greater understanding of the religions in the world in which they live. The children learnt about the following celebrations. YEAR R – Hinduism ‘Divali’ YEAR 1 – Judaism ‘Passover’ YEAR 2 – Christianity ‘Baptism’ YEAR 3 – Christianity ‘Weddings’ YEAR 4 – Christianity ‘Holy Communion’ YEAR 5 – Christianity ‘Christmas’ (Comparing varying traditions around the world) YEAR 6 – Buddhism ‘Vesak’ The event was attended by the Vice Chair of Governors, Lorna Adamson, and the feedback I received from both Lorna and the parents in the playground afterwards was very positive indeed. These curriculum afternoons take a lot of extra preparation and planning and the teachers spend a lot of time creating resources and setting up the rooms ready for parents to come in and work alongside the children. The super positive comments received along with seeing the enjoyment had by children makes the time and effort all worthwhile. I spoke to a few parents during the event about things we could improve on next time and so we have some tweaks that we can make to the next curriculum afternoon. ![]() Me and Mrs Ross showing some Bhangra dancing! Just when you thought things couldn't get any better! Today's Spelling Bee Final was amazing! The newly added round of 'Back Spell' really increased the pressure of the competition but the children stepped up to the challenge.
I was so impressed with the dedication and commitment shown by the pupils in the build up to the competition. It paid off! Those words were so tough! Thank you again to the parents who came along and support... I think some of you were more nervous than the children. Today we received the following letter...
Well done to the pupils, the teachers and support staff and parents at home for supporting and practising these vital skills with their children at home. Mr Stock A huge thank you to the Parents who came along to watch the Year Group Final of the Spelling Bee for Year 5 and 6. The children have worked very hard to learn these spellings and it was great to see the adults coming along to support.
Well done to all of the children who made it this far... those spellings were tough!!! Well done to the Year Group Winners - Robbie and Thalia. Super job! As mentioned at the end of the final, the idea of the spelling bee was to create some excitement around spelling (and I think it did - today was great fun!) but also to expand pupils vocabulary which will help to improve their writing. ![]() In order to inspire children to read more at home we continue to promote reading in a number of different ways. Classes now have multiple copies (15x) of class texts so that they can read along with the class teachers. The reading scheme has been developed further in to KS2 and in assemblies each week staff are reading parts of books to help develop interest in them. The books will be added to the prize box, so if children read at home 5x week they will be in the running to win one… however, if your child is excited about a book they have been read in assembly you can get hold a copy quite easy from an online retailer, in high street shops and in some supermarkets. These weeks book shared with the children was: The Parent Agency – David Baddiel “A brilliantly funny, gripping novel from a born storyteller, The Parent Agency is an epic wish-fulfilment adventure for every child – and for the child in everyone. Barry said, a third time, “I wish I had better parents!” And then suddenly the entire room started to shake… Barry Bennett hates being called Barry. In fact it’s number 2 on the list of things he blames his parents for, along with 1) ‘being boring’ and 3) ‘always being tired’. But there is a world, not far from this one, where parents don’t have children. That’s far too random for something so big and important. In this world, children are allowed to choose their parents. For Barry Bennett, this world seems like a dream come true. Only things turn out to be not quite that simple… ISBN 978-0007554508 Last week we sent out information about collecting special addition lids. In order to send off for a free latest Samsung Tablet we need to collect 50 lids. We now have 1 lid... we just need another 49!
Treat yourself to a sandwich (and the neighbours) over the weekend and make sure you spread on some Flora (from a tub with the special lid!) and then send the lid into school to add to the 1 already collected! Thank you... Mr Stock A huge well done to all the children at TSM who have been working hard to learn their spelling bee words over the last few weeks.
I have been so impressed with the attitude of the children towards this. Even this morning, I had children at the gate asking me to test them on their spelling. The buzz has been amazing. I cant wait to see children use these spellings in their writing. The five finalists from each year group have been found and next week sees the live finals! Parents should have recieved letters inviting them to these finals. Its going to be great fun! Like sports day... winning is great but taking part is just as important. Well done to all who showed the TSM commitment to challenge. |
