The children have been fascinated learning about Diwali this week. They loved dancing along to our Diwali song, cooking Chapatis, a traditional food served at Diwali and creating their own Diva lamps. They also enjoyed making their own Rangoli inspired patterns in play dough and out on the playground with stencils and powder paint. We also learnt about why we celebrate fireworks night and the children made some fantastic firework pictures.
This week we have had lots of Halloween themed fun! The children enjoyed melting our frozen witches hands to discover what was hiding inside. We had lots of fun making spells and potions. The children had a go at writing some absolutely fantastic spells that caused the staff to act like crazy animals. Poor Mrs Goodhand was the victim of many of the spells and turned into a rat, bat, cat, lion, tiger and snake amongst other things!
The children enjoyed decorating their bananas as monsters and their strawberries as ghosts. This week we have been thinking about the human body. We learnt ‘The Skelton Song’ and had lots of fun singing and dancing along. We read the story Funny Bones too and talked about the different bones in our bodies. 🦴
The children have had lots of fun exploring the X-rays on our light box, building a body puzzle and putting together a giant skeleton picture. We have also begun making our own skeleton pictures with art straws based on ‘Funny Bones’. We learnt that the human body has around 206 bones. (It can vary!). We felt our ribs and our back bones and talked about why the skull is so important! We also looked at pictures of the human brain and decided that it looked a bit yucky, even though it is so important because it controls our body. What super learning! This week we have been learning all about our emotions. By reading the Colour Monster by Anna Llena's we have not only learnt new vocabulary but we now have a better understanding of what emotions are. The children have been highly engaged with this book and have been overheard discussing how they are feeling by using 'I feel yellow' or ' I feel green'. This has been incredibly heart warming as it has also led onto the children working out how to help each other if their friends are not happy. Child A: I feel sad as no-one will play with me. Child B: I love you and I will play with you. We have done artwork relating to this book and the children have been able to capture the facial expression of the corresponding colour monster brilliantly! We all hope you have a yellow weekend. This week we have been thinking very deeply about the numbers 1,2 and 3. We have discussed and found lots of different ways to represent these numbers. The children enjoyed exploring the classroom and bringing back different representations of each number to show us. They then completed a sorting activity with the numbers. Super cutting and sorting skills! Well done Donaldson class.
This week the children have been making their Christmas card designs for our school fundraiser. What super cards!
The whole school has had a great time carrying out a biscuit investigation at the start of this term! The children thoroughly enjoyed our first session in the wild woods. They loved looking at and watching the chickens, building dens, pond dipping and playing on the rope swings. We saw some great team work getting on and off of the hammock swing and the children took turns very well. What a super first week and a half for the children in Donaldson class! The children have settled in so well, quickly learning our class rules and routines. The children have had a great time exploring our classroom and have already showed us some super learning. Take a look at the pictures of the children enjoying their first 7 days at school. Well done Donaldson class! |
