On Friday we has the most magical day at Colchester Zoo. We had the morning to explore the zoo and animals and see the Christmas decorations. Some of us even got a ride on the Christmas train. After lunch we had the most incredible experience with the penguins. We were greeted by an elf who was very upset because she had lost the magical dust which makes the sleigh move, she thought penguins would be a good replacement to fly the sleigh. We soon discovered they wouldn't because they cant fly and they are very heavy. Then Father Christmas himself came to visit us and it turned out he had the magic flying dust all along! In his big, red sack he had a little gift for us all....our very own little penguin! Some of us were exhausted by the end of the day!

Yesterday afternoon we had a visit from 2 farmers, Nick and Matt. They answered questions we had written and showed us their huge tractor! We even got to sit in it! Nick brought us some freshly picked vegetables to explore and name. So today we used those delicious, fresh vegetables to make soup. We had to wash them first as they were covered in mud (which we liked!) and then we used careful peeling and cutting skills to prepare them before we boiled and blended them together to make a lovely warming snack. Well done Year 1!
A big thank you to the children from Year 3 who came to visit to share their reports with us. We learnt all about Komodo Dragons. We came away with some very interesting facts. Well done to Year 1 for listening so carefully, it was lovely to hear at the end what they had learnt. Well done Year 3.
With today being Halloween, we have used pumpkins to inspire our learning. We have had lots of fun exploring them. We used our senses to smell and feel them and came up with good adjectives to describe them and wrote sentences to say what we liked and didn't like about them. In phonics we used the pumpkins which Mrs Stockdale had been painted with chalkboard paint to find, read and spell the tricky words we are learning. We used golf tees to choose a tricky word and make a hole in the pumpkin. Thank you to Isaac who made us all Halloween cakes! Yummy! The children have been enjoyed our daily phonic sessions. They have just started learning the Phase 5 sounds and today we learnt the 'ay' sound. We have been splatting the sounds outside with the fly swats and have been painting the sounds in water. We have been playing a game called buried treasure where we sort the good words and the silly words into treasure chest.
https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/ParentsMenu.htm The link above is good to explain what phonics is and how we structure our sessions. Our topic in science is our bodies. We have been learning to name the body parts some which can be seen and some which are hidden underneath our skin. Today we made Skelton pictures using cotton buds and used bones to recreate our body. We added voices onto our skeletons to make them speak and tell you the body parts. We had great fun watching our clips back! Welcome to Year 1's blog!
