Year 6 have heard all about our science studies on bugs! They have been learning about classifying creatures and so created some classification charts for Year 1. We tested them out and found they were really helpful when big hunting. The Year 1s and Year 6s worked really well together and found lots of interesting creepy crawlies which they were able to identify using the charts!

...or in MacArthur’s case - 29 lost sheep!
MacArthur looked at the parable of the lost sheep in RE today. We made our own origami sheep but over lunchtime they all went missing! We had to pretend to be the shepherd and went hunting for our sheep. They had hidden all around the school! On Tuesday, we went on a bug safari. We had to pack our safari bags full of equipment such as pooters, magnifying pots and invertebrate identification sheets. In our groups, we followed our safari rules and used the equipment to search for bugs being careful not to disturb their environments.
We found lots of different invertebrates and had lots of fun being explorers.Pictures to follow! MacArthur really enjoyed their Great Fire of London experience! We dressed up in outfits from the time and experienced life as a 1666 baker! Using a simple bread recipe, we made our own bread rolls. We used brown flour as only the very rich would have been able to afford to buy white flour for their bread! We also wrote using quills and ink! It took a very long time as you have to dip the quill in every time you want to write a letter!
As part of our work on the Great Fire of London, MacArthur have made their own 1666 street. They made houses focussing on the period features of the time - wooden timber beams, an overhanging jetty, thatched roof, rough wattle and daub walls and diamond windows. MacArthur made the street and acted out the fire, thinking about how the fire might of spread and how they tried to stop it.
Can you spot Thomas Farriner in his bakery or the people escaping by cart or on the River Thames? As part of it work on the Great Fire of London, MacArthur have spent the week creating our very own newspaper. We have become reporters and have researched, written and edited our articles. We thought about the people who were there and even managed to get a quote from Samuel Pepys!
Keep your eyes peeled in the coming days for MacArthurs 'London Gazette' to go live! In science this week we looked at holidays! We looked at the different things we would need to pack for holidays in different places. The first holiday we packed for was a beach holiday. We decided that we would need to pack: shirts, short sleeved t-shirts, flip flops, sun hat, insect repellent, lip balm and sun cream. We then picked for a skiing holiday. We knew that we would need different items for this holiday! This time we packed: a long sleeve shirt, woolly socks, boots, a jumper, woolly hat, scarf, gloves, lip balm and sun cream. We talked about the fact that sun cream is important even on a skiing holiday. The sun can even burn us when the sun isn't out! Jessie told us all that at the top of the mountain it is really sunny even though there is still snow all around you!
We then packed for a camping holiday. Because the weather can change so quickly we packed everything!! Do you really know what the inside of the food you eat really looks like?
Can you name the different parts of fruits, vegetables and plants? In literacy we are looking at instructions. We had to follow some instructions to make our very own hedgehogs! Check them out! |
