This week in phonics we have been learning and applying some new sounds. Mrs Stagg's group have been learning the 'oa' sound, Mrs Stockdale's group learning the 'ure' sound and Mrs Cumming's group have been learning the 't' sound. We have been using Geraldine the Giraffe to help us learn the sounds along with help from Mr Thorne. Mr Thorne can also be helpful to those parents who are unsure of the pronunciation of the sounds, understanding the concept of phonics is a tricky subject. I have included the link to Mr Thorne's website, if you ever need to check the pronunciation of any sounds this website is great. Our topic for science this term is 'Who am I'. We have been exploring our skeltons and why they are so important. We started our topic by labelling our bodies and then we had a go at making a skelton using dog bones and cotton buds. The children loved making these. Next week we will be exploring our senses.
This year the children will complete an independent study, this is made up of facts, information and pictures. The children have chosen the topic of 'Animals'. It would be great if over the year the children could carry out some research at home about particular animals of their interest. We can then include this information in their independent study folders. Please send any work completed at home in with your child.
Thank you for your co-operation and support. Mrs Stockdale We would like to welcome all the new children and parents to year 1. We have had a busy first week back, settling in and learning the new routines. We wanted to share with you what we have been up to so far. We have started our new topic of 'Toys' which is based around a story called 'Lost in the Toy Museum'. We have been writing lists, labels and sentences based around the story. In science we have been learning about our body, labeling the different parts and working out what our 5 senses do. We have been learning a song about our 5 senses. Please see link below. In Art, we have been using different mark making tools to respond to the story 'Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy'. The children enjoyed using pastels and charcoal for the first time. We have also been exploring our class name 'MacArthur'. We have learnt all about Ellen MacArthur and how she sailed around the world in 71 days. We thought about times when we have been courageous, brave and confident and put our ideas on sail boats. Some of these are displayed on our class door. For those parents that couldn't attend the meet the teach presentation I have attached the slides for you browse through to find out about the routines and procedures for year 1. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask me. Year 1 class, Mrs Stockdale, Mrs Stagg and Mrs Wray What a fantastic, sunny, windy and rainy day at the beach yesterday. It was lovely to see the children working together and having so much fun! They objects from the beach for their poems (apologies if they were rather smelly), they loved looking for different types of stones, crabs and shells. We even found a starfish! The children then had fun building sandcastles, making rivers and moats and burying each other. A few of us braved the cold waters and paddled out feet apart from the few which were jumping the waves and fell in, to say the least they were very wet and soggy! We then had the long walk along the beach front to the ice cream shop. There were lots of comments 'are we there yet'. I think this was the quietist (and messiest) part of the day. We finished the day with ball games (thank you Mr Gavin!) and duck, duck, goose on the beach before sheltering under the leisure centre due to rain where we played a game of tomato ketchup! Thank you to all of the parent helpers. This term our science topic is about animals. We have been learning to name them and their different body parts. This weeks we were looking at birds. We looked at different types, named them and looked at their features. We then decided to make bird feeders to see which birds we may be able to attract in our school grounds. Cabhan said he thought it smelt disgusting just like Parma ham! I can't believe this is the last term! We have had a busy few weeks back. We have been making the most of the swimming pool, the children love being in the water! We also had great fun at the mad hatters tea party! We think our hats looked pretty funky! Not sure who enjoyed it more me or the children! The whole class played a game of duck, duck goose then had lots of fun with the parachute. I would also like to say well done to Emily, Cabhan, Archie & Diako as their work got entered into the literacy competition last week, all of the children tried so hard! |
