| The children put on a brilliant assembly yesterday, Me and Mrs Stagg were very proud of them. They have worked extra hard to prepare it and all spoke clearly and confidently. They showed off their castles which they had worked very hard on constructing. If you missed it these our the final products. The children also sang 'Let it go' in German, this was not easy for them to learn (or me!) but they persevered. When shooting the video we had a visit from Olaf. The children have had a few pictures taken with him. Have a lovely half term! |

A brilliant day had by all at Colchester Castle yesterday. The children were buzzing at the end of the day and were excited to talk about their favourite parts of the day. We started off by touring the castle, engaging with the interactive displays, dressing up as knights and slaves and going down to the prisons. We then took part in a group activity where we looked at the different foods which may have been eaten, looked at a quill pen and had a go at colouring our own illuminated letters. We also use a pestle and mortar to mix a range of spices which may have been used during the Norman period, I'm sure some of the children will have already told you that some smelt disgusting! The most exciting part of the day for some of the children was lunchtime! We sat in the castle gardens on the old ruins in the sunshine. After lunch we took place in a story tour lead by the castle knight who was very funny! We got to wear special tabards just like what the knight was wearing. He showed us the castle well (It took 4 seconds for the 2p to get to the bottom), the big heavy, thick doors and even took us up the spiral staircase to the top of the castle and we had a pretend battle on the castle drawbridge. We then spent some more time exploring the castle the children loved racing the horses using the interactive chariot. Adam was super good at this- he came first place! Thank you to the parent helpers and to the children for being well behaved. After receiving a letter from the Happy Ever After police to say the big bad wolf had gone missing we made our own wanted posters to help the police find it. It so happened that the following day Mrs Stagg found him hiding on the bushes near the field so we brought him in to be questioned (luckily he was handcuffed!). The children asked him questions like 'Why did you eat grandma?' 'How did you escape from prison?' We then wrote letters to Little Red Riding Hood pretending to be the wolf. We told her how sorry we were and that we would never do it again! We also began making our model castles this week. The children were busy cutting and sticking using lots of new skills to join the different parts of the castle together. We are going to save our final products to show you at our class assembly.
Children loved making porridge, they measured out the ingredients, followed instructions carefully and used a microwave to cook their own porridge, while eating it they said which character out of 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' they were most like. Some were so full afterwards they said they needed a lie down just like Goldilocks!
This week we have continued our learning on traditional tales in science we read the three little pigs and planned an investigation to see which house would keep the pigs safe from the scary wolf. We predicted which one we thought may be best and explained why. We then built our houses using straw, sticks and bricks and tested them, as we don't have any wolves living nearby we used a hair dryer. We thought carefully about making the test fair and made sure the hairdryer was on the same setting each time and held it on hour houses for 10 seconds. A lot of out predictions were right and the house made of bricks was the strongest.
At the beginning of next term the children will be using cereal/cardboard boxes and kitchen roll tubes in DT. If you have any at home please save them and bring them in or the first week back. Every child is going to need a few of each...so get saving! Thank you.
Another week, more dinosaur exploring! In maths we have been measuring the length of dinosaurs in meters and feet. We learnt that the school field is nearly 27 meters the same as a diplodocus. We then compared the different sizes to the length of cars and buses. We have also been learning about the job of a palaeontologist and how they have to be careful when removing bones. We thought about how tricky this may be and tested it out on cookies. We had to remove all of the chocolate chips from the cookie without breaking it. I think the children were in more of a hurry to eat them! Yesterday for World Book Day we dressed up as our favourite book character. In the morning Mrs Matthews gave a special assesmbly all about World Book Day and in the afternoon we sat in a circle reading our favourite books while we enjoyed cakes from Little Red Riding Hood. Can you guess who we are dressed up as? One of our new topics this term is dinosaurs, in literacy we have been looking at the difference between fiction and non-fiction and we are each researching one dinosaur ready to make our own class non-fiction book.
Today we had a letter from John who is a palaeontologist, he told us to go and search the school field for dinosaur bones from a long time ago. We looked really carefully and were surprised to find 5 bones! We looked at the size of the bones and thought carefully about which dinosaur they may have come from. We have also been making fossils from salt dough. We have learnt that a fossil is the remains of an animal in a rock. We each chose our favourite dinosaur to imprint into the dough. |
