As part of our literacy work based on the book 'Room on the Broom', MacArthur class had lots of fun making potions! We had to follow the list left for us by the witch and carefully count and measure out the ingredients for the broomstick potion! We had lots of fun and some of us got a little bit messy!

What a fantastic start MacArthur have made in Year 1. We have had lots of fun so far including some outdoor maths, bear hunts, dinosaurs invading the classroom and giant timelines!
One of our highlights of Year 1 so far has been when Year 4 came for a visit. As part of our guided reading sessions, MacArthur shared books with the older children. Can you spot what books we were reading in the pictures below?
Thank you to Simmonds Class who came in Friday afternoon to carry out an investigation.....which sherbet the children liked best. The class had made their own and we were the official testers, lots of funny faces and ummms and ahhhs. There was great fun had by all yesterday on our school trip to Colchester Castle. Our visit links in with our Traditional Tales topic and History. We spent the day touring the castle, trying on outfits that would have been worn and exploring old artefacts. We then took part in a group activity where we looked at the different foods which may have been eaten, looked at a quill pen and had a go at colouring our own illuminated letters. We smelt lots of spices that were used as medicines, most didn't smell very nice! After lunch we took part in a guided story which was led by the lord of the castle. We thought about how people would try and get into the castle and how we could defend it. We got to wear special tabards and learnt lots about the castle. We even got to walk along the spiral staircase up 43 steps to get to the top. We had a pretend battle where we got to charge at the castle scaring all of the ladies near by! After a great day we were all very tired, some of us even had a nap on the coach! Thank you to all the parent helpers and the children for being so well behaved! In RE we have been learning about the Jewish celebration of Shabbat. This week we had a go at making our own challah bread. This would have been eaten at the Shabbat meal along with lots of other delicious foods. We had to look at the ingredients carefully and folded the dough to make a plait. We had very mixed reviews about how the bread tasted! In Art this week we looked at the artist Patrick Heron, he uses stripes and hot and cold colours. We had lots of fun (and mess) creating our own.
Thank You for sending in lots of cardboard boxes for us to use. We now have enough and don't require anymore. We can now start our project!
Thanks again! This week we received a letter from the Happy Ever After Police to say the Big Bad Wolf has gone missing!
We were asked to make wanted posters to help find him! The following day Mrs Stagg found the big bad wolf running on the field, she brought him into year 1 to be questioned....he was very sorry! We then wrote letters to Little Red Riding Hood pretending to be the wolf. We are working hard to use exclamation marks in our writing! This week we have continued our learning on traditional tales, looking at the story of Little Red Riding Hood. We made porridge just like in the tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We used measuring skills and time to help us and got to taste it at the end, we had to wait until the temperature was just right!
In RE we have been looking at the religion Judaism, we got to learn about the celebration of Shabbat and even got to try on a Kippah and look at a Torah. In Art we have been learning about the environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy, we looked at his work and how he uses natural materials to create designs. We then had a go at making some of our own designs on the field. Today we carried out an investigation to see which material would be strongest for the pigs house and why. We spent time predicting the result thinking about why certain materials would be suitable and why some wouldn't. We then constructed our buildings using either bricks, straw or sticks. The big bad wolf hair dryer paid us a visit and huffed and puffed to see which houses would blow away. Maybe you can ask the children which material was the best and why?
Great fun had by all! |
