This week, the children worked in groups to research and present information about an invertebrate group. The groups were then able to look at each of the different presentations, answering questions about them as they went.

We started our first science lesson back, last week, by looking at some of the vocabulary we were expected to know and use during this topic. The children were asked to sort the vocabulary in any way they wanted: some chose to sort them in to words they knew and didn't know; others sorted them into words that were to do with animals, those to do with plants and other words. At the start of our second lesson we played ARTICULATE, where the children needed to describe one of the key vocabulary without saying certain words. They found it really difficult but, after some thought, they were actually very good at choosing precise words to help the rest of the children work out what word was! During the first lesson, the children were split into groups. Each child was expected to research one of the vertebrate groups and then report back to the rest of their group so, by the end of the lesson, everyone had learnt about some of the characteristics of all of the vertebrate groups as well as some animals that fit into them. To present their work, the children then produced exploding books. great use of these learning gems:During our lesson today, we played a game involving finding factors and multiples. It was great to see the children being confident in using these words and being able to find both factors and multiples of numbers. They had lots of fun trying to force their partner to lose by choosing a number that there were no more factors and multiples left on the game board! good use of this learning gem:During the maths lessons this week we have been working on multiplying and dividing fractions. First the children worked on multiplying fractions by integers and then they looked at multiplying fractions by fractions. After drawing these multiplication problems out, they quickly realised that all they needed to do was multiply the numerators together and then multiply the denominators. They then completed their independent work including putting together a multiplication jigsaw. We then looked at dividing fractions by integers, relating this to the multiplication work we had done before. good use of these learning gems:To end our textile unit we have created some fantastic textile batik wall hangings. We designed them using a Christmas Theme and applied melted wax to the fabric and then used fabric ink to colour them. We are pleased with the results. OUR FINISHED WORK:Good use of these Learning Gems:Today saw the second six children perform their poems to the rest of the class. In Mandela Class we are lucky enough to have Mr Harvey work with us to help a different group (each half term) to learn a poem off by heart and recite it to the rest of the class. This is a skill, which is not only part of the Year 6 expectations for reading, but is also a life skill which prepares the children for High School and beyond. It always amazes me how all different types of children respond to the task and the change which occurs in their confidence and ability in just 6 weeks. This group did particularly well as they also performed their poems at the KS2 Christmas Carol Service. Good use of these Learning Gems:![]() In Design Technology this term we have been designing and making our own bags. It's been top secret however as they are Christmas presents for our friends and family. We wrapped them in paper and placed them under our DT tree. We are really pleased with the results.
Good use of these Learning Gems:We took part in a countrywide Santa Dash this afternoon, as part of the School Games Partnership. Despite the cold, the children ran, walked or passed a football around the filed for 10 minutes, with a smile on most faces! good use of this learning gem: |
