Today we completed the first of 2 fraction topics by looking at solving subtractions involving mixed numbers. Once again, the children made great use of their understanding of how to make equivalent fractions and how to convert mixed numbers into improper fractions to be able to do this. Lots made good use of their detectives books to help them use the method to start with, before growing in confidence and being able to do it from memory.

Today we were able to put together our finished patchwork quilt, made up of a variety of dip dyed fabric squares, with a design produced with permanent fabric markers and enhanced with stitching detail. After dyeing our fabric squares, we added a design with fabric pens and then enhanced our work with stitching details. OUR INDIVIDUAL FINISHED SQUARESGood use of these Learning Gems:We continued with our fraction work this week. We started by reminding ourselves how to find equivalent fractions and simplify fractions; two children became teachers for a short time and came up to the board to go through an example of each of them. They did a brilliant job, asking for other children's contributions and demonstrating a great understanding of the methods. We then moved on to comparing and ordering fractions by finding equivalent fractions. Finally, we looked at adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators as well as adding mixed numbers. They were shown 2 different methods for adding mixed numbers and, although they preferred the first method, they were also able to use the second method! Great use of these learning gems:1. CREATED A FIRST DRAFT3. WORKED ON OUR FINAL DRAFT4. FINISHED OUR BOOKS AND they are ready for Y4 TO READ!The books turned out brilliantly. We worked so hard on them and we can't wait to see what Y4 think of them!
GOOD USE OF THESE LEARNING GEMS:This week we started our new topic on fractions. We began with finding equivalent fractions, which we then used to help place fractions on a number line. After that, we then looked at simplifying fractions using the factors work from our previous topic to help us. Good use of these learning gems:In PSHE we have been focusing on Celebrating Differences. The school have had a new batch of picture books for KS1 and we read them and discussed how they celebrated different forms of diversity. We had some super mature discussions. Good use of these Learning Gems:After refining our sewing skills we designed our bags and then made templates, cut out the fabric and sewed together our prototype bags. The prototypes are smaller versions of our designs and are made from plain fabric. Designing our bagsMaking our prototypesOur finished PrototypesNow our prototypes are finished we can consider what went wrong and what worked before we make our final designs for our clients. Hopefully they will like them! Good use of these Learning Gems:Today we looked at the importance of knowing the order that operations should be done in a calculation with multiple operations as we found that if we didn't do them one way we would all get different answers! Before the children set to work on some independent questions, they made a BIDMAS mobile in groups to remind them what it stood for and the order the operations need to be done in. good use of these learning gems:Ambassadors are selected by the Senior Leadership Team based on discussions with class teachers, their behaviour and conduct in and out of the classroom, ability to listen and work as part of a team and evidence of being a good role model as well as the poster submitted. Y6 children were interviewed by Mrs Matthews and Mrs MacFarlane. We are so proud of our Y6 Ambassadors who will lead all of the School Ambassadors! Good use of this Learning Gem:Today we had great fun competing in an Athletics Sporting Event for Schools at Westborne Academy. Good use of these Learning Gems: |
