In English we have been writing our own retelling of the short animation of Broken - the story of Rock, Paper and Scissors. We have been using our Vocabulary Ninja, DADWAVERS!, Show not Tell and Sentences of 3 skills to help us retell the story in our own words. After planning, drafting in our books and typing up and editing our work we then made them into picture books, which we have illustrated beautifully. We are so pleased with the finished results! Our Owls:Good use of these Learning Gems:In Art we have been exploring the work of the famous sculptor and painter Alberto Giacometti, comparing his unique style with that of Henry Moore (who we looked at earlier on in this unit). We then made our own Giacometti style sculptures using garden wire and modroc. CREATING OUR SCULPTURES:It was messy, but great fun, creating our sculptures using modroc to cover our wire shaped designs. OUR FINISHED WORK:We painted our finished sculptures black once we they had dried. Good use of these Learning Gems:We had a great day today sharing our favourite books and designing new front covers for them, Reading with YR and creating our own Reading dens to get cosy and read a book! 📖📚 What a lovely day! Reading to our YR buddiesMaking reading densOur favourite books - new front coversRefreshing our class libraryOne of aims for World Book Day was to refresh our class library. We are really pleased with our class library but we did decide to tidy it up a bit, make our Reading Scrapbook (which is full of book recommendations) more prominent and to make more room for the front overs for all the books we've read this year! We also decide to introduce a 'We are currently reading..." display, we will be asking an adult in school and one of our table groups what book they are currently reading, providing a QR code if anyone would like to find out more about the book. We will change this every 2 weeks.
After doing some research on Ancient Greek pottery and creating our own paper greek pots, we then made our own Greek pots out of clay. Once the clay had dried, we designed the decoration for our pots and painted them! We are very pleased with the finished results! Good use of these Learning Gems:Today saw the third poetry recital. In Mandela Class we are lucky enough to have Mr Harvey work with us to help a different group (each half term) to learn a poem off by heart and recite it to the rest of the class. This is a skill, which is not only part of the Year 6 expectations for reading, but is also a life skill which prepares the children for High School and beyond. It always amazes me how all different types of children respond to the task and the change which occurs in their confidence and ability in just 6 weeks. This group did particularly well as they missed some sessions due to isolating, sadly one member of the group was late into school today, so missed his chance to perform. Well done to those who took part! Good use of these Learning Gems:We have been learning how to use Show not Tell in our writing, where you show the reader how someone is feeling, rather than just simply telling the reader. Good use of these Learning Gems:We have been learning about branching keys in Science. A branching key can be used to classify a group of items. It uses questions. The answer is ‘yes’ for some items and ‘no’ for the others. Our first attempt at a Branching KeyGood use of these Learning Gems:Our finished sculptures:Good use of these Learning Gems:Today Y6 were able to spend time in the Wild Wood - they had a great time! They particularly enjoyed making clay woodland creatures for the younger children to find in the wild wood. Good use of these Learning Gems: |
