Today, the other half of the class got the opportunity to follow very specific instructions in order to make a pencil holder on TinkerCAD. This group found a shortcut for make sure the shapes were the correct size, so had time to add items into their completed pencil holders too!

Before half term we had learnt about activities you might do on holiday. Today, we practised writing those phrases and then had some very fun games of pairs (trying to match up our written phrases with a picture of the activity). The children were really good at correctly matching them together. :) Good use of these learning gems:The children have been busy making prototypes of the bags they have designed. Each bag is completely individual and I am so pleased to see what they have already produced. The class have found this process so useful as they have discovered things they need to make sure to do when they make their final bag, meaning they are less likely to make mistakes during this process! Great use of these learning gems:Today we used our Editing Stations to improve our own work. We visited each station to help us improve the first draft of our chapters for our non-fiction books. It really made us think about our work and ways to improve it! Tomorrow we will start writing up or typing up our books in neat. Good use of these Learning Gems:Our completed Challenges:Challenge 2 Challenge 4 Good use of these Learning Gems:This afternoon the children worked on making shapes with specific measurements. This was followed up with reminding the children how to create holes in objects. All this led to the children starting to create a pencil holder with very clear specifications! Great use of these learning gems:This morning, we explored a couple of ways we could find multiples of 2-digit numbers in order to help us when needing to divide with 2-digit numbers. It was really interesting to see the children's favourite method for finding the multiples and also to see whether they used this same method when working on short division. Most of the children found the partitioning method easier to work on when it was just finding the multiples but relied on the adding method when needing multiples for division! Great use of these learning gems:Today saw the first five children perform their poems to the rest of the class.
In Mandela Class we are lucky enough to have Mr Harvey work with us to help a different group (each half term) to learn a poem off by heart and recite it to the rest of the class. This is a skill, which is not only part of the Year 6 expectations for reading, but is also a life skill which prepares the children for High School and beyond. It always amazes me how all different types of children respond to the task and the change which occurs in their confidence and ability in just 6 weeks. Well done! To finish our first science topic this year, we created exploding books to show some of the things we had learnt. After some children had completed their exploding books, they got the opportunity to make a battery just like Michael Faraday once did! Good use of these learning gems:We had our first lesson this year on using the written method for short division. We played a 'boxes' game that involved us working out the answer to a calculation using short division and if our partner agreed we were correct we were allowed to draw a line on the game card - if we were the last one to complete the box we got points!
