This week in science we made periscopes and then tested them out! We then explained how a periscope worked, allowing us to see an object even when we aren't directly looking at it. Whilst some children were making their periscopes, others were carrying out their own investigations. Most children chose to investigate 'Which material is most reflective?'. Below are a few of the conclusions the children made.

The class are continuing to work hard with fractions, this week was all about multiplying and dividing them. I have been so impressed with the increased use of their maths vocabulary when explaining their working out this week and their approach to the range of methods we have been working on.
The children have been working really hard this week, on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as multiplying fractions by integers. One of the first things we did was use vocabulary bullseye to make sure we understood what some of the vocabulary we would be using over the next few weeks actually meant. When we first did this, very few children used the word integer and so it was really great to hear them all confidently using it by the end of maths lessons this week! Below is just a small sample of the brilliant work the class have produced during the week. Great use of these learning gems:This week we began our new topic all about light. The first thing we did was think about questions we wanted answering on light. Following this we thought about the types of investigations that would have to be carried out to answer our questions. We found lots of them could be answered using secondary sources (talking to experts, using books or using the internet). I have set the children a challenge to find some of the answers in their own time and am looking forward to seeing what they find. After this, we carried out a short investigation trying to prove that light appears to travel in straight lines. The children were given the equipment they needed and had to work out what they could do. I was impressed with how quickly they were able to work out how to use the equipment to show light travels in straight lines. They then wrote about what they did in their books and explained what this showed. After exploring how we see things, we then started to look at mirrors. The children started by using them to reflect and write messages before they worked in small groups to see if they could get light rays to reflect off a mirror to change the direction of them. A great start to our new topic!
It was a really busy end to this term as we celebrated having everyone back in the classroom and the end of our history and DT WWII topics by making and eating a rationing meal, playing some 1940s games and creating short pieces for the radio. Food preparation, Enjoying all our hard work, Playing 1940s games, Finally, here are the radio shows we created. During our last few weeks of term, and our return to school, we have been developing our watercoloring skills further by painting fruit, building upon the skills learnt as part of remote learning. We are very pleased with the results! We started by painting apples using an outline given on the paper. The following week we then moved onto painting pears studying example paintings and real pears. The last week (as Mrs M was not in) we followed an online tutorial to produce a watercolour watermelon slice! I hope you agree our painting skills have really developed this year! Great use of these Learning Gems:We had been working on this topic during remote learning and we finished it with a double page spread (at school) to show what we had learnt. The children thoroughly enjoyed being given the opportunity to show what they knew in their own ways. Good use of these learning Gems:Since we've all been back at school, we have been working really hard to write a song including some of the things we need to remember when we are working with Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. First we looked at the number of syllables that were in the song we wanted to use - George Ezra's Shotgun - to help us make sure the lines we came up with would fit with the music. Then we started brainstorming things we know about Fractions, Decimals and Percentages and how we could make them into lines for the song. After we had written the song, we practiced a few times and then decided we should go a little further and create a music video to go along with our singing! We worked in groups to plan and create part of the music video. Here are some of us preparing our props... As you will see when you watch the video, some of us wanted to be on the camera and others were happy to be behind the camera! Then, after lots of editing, the song and its music video was ready for your viewing. We hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it. We will continue to use it is class to help us. Great use of these learning gems:Today, we finished a task we had begun last week on entomologists. We watched a short video to find out what they were and then produced a flip card about some types. We were amazed by some of the things you can do as an entomologists - especially helping to solve crimes and finding new species! We created branching keys this afternoon, using the insects that had been painted during a lockdown art lesson and the knowledge of branching keys we had gained from a lockdown science lesson. Good use of this learning gem: |
