With everyone back in school this week, we decided to make sure we hadn't all forgotten multiplication tables, squared and cubed numbers whilst learning from home. On Thursday we had a discussion challenge designed by Mr Bee, to look at the numbers 1-50 on the grid and see what we noticed about the colours. The children quickly spotted the multiples of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7. We then looked at other colours and shapes on the grid and was able to identify the prime numbers, squared and cubed numbers were also shown. |
We then used the colours we had identified to complete our own grids. Some children chose to use 50-100 and others challenged themselves by choosing their own numbers. On Friday, we used our multiplication, squared and cubed number knowledge in a different way by completing a mosaic puzzle. We have also started to write a song based on our knowledge of Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. We hope to be able to show you the finished song soon!

In Mandela class one of our favourite times of the week is Book Club, where we get to share and read books in small groups purely for fun and discuss what we are reading. We do this 3 days a week. It was lovely to get back to it, now everyone is back in school. Our new books:Enjoying Reading in Book Club:Good use of these Learning Gems:
Good use of these Learning Gems:Our last week before we are all back together again! Here are the highlights: Art - Watercolour Insect Work
English - Final Suspense StoriesThis week we finished off our suspense stories ready to share them when return to school next week.
Some of us typed them up as short stories whilst others made them into mini picture books. We used the toolkit to help remind us the techniques we needed to include. Mandela Class have been working hard after a well deserved break over half term. We've done lots of great work at home and at school. Here are some of the highlights: English - Suspense WritingIn English we have been looking at examples of suspense writing and exploring the writer's toolkit for building suspense in our writing.
Then we had a go at a short burst of suspense writing, trying to include elements from the toolkit. Art - EXPERIMENTING with WatercolourWe experimented with watercolours by mixing a range of colours from the rainbow. We then used our colour mixing skills to create a Kandinsky style Concentric Circles painting. DT - Baking SconesIn school we have enjoyed cooking most weeks. This week we baked cheese and fruit scones. Yummy! ScienceIn science this week we looked at the platypus and how scientists found it hard to put them into a vertebrate group as they have features from 2 groups (e.g. it has a bill and lays eggs like a bird but it produces milk to feed its young like a mammal). After this we then designed our own creature which had features from at least 2 different vertebrate groups. Below are just a few of their creatures! STEMThe children were set a challenge of making a parachute to safely land a person. There was lots of fun and investigating done for this challenge from both those in school and those learning at home!
We had an unusual week before half term break, as it was snowing! To give us plenty of time in the snow, we had a few changes to the usual timetable. English - Just like a snowflake, we are uniqueEnglish - Our finished poemsArt - Snow OwlsMaths - A snowflake challenge
Although school was closed to all pupils today, we still continued our online learning although it was all around the theme of snow!
English - List PoemsWe have been writing our own list poems using a great collection of places and abstract nouns. Art - Paper Plate ArtworkWe used two of Darrell Wakelam's "Art Jumpstart" activities to create paper plate designs from 1 paper plate. If you would like to see more of his activities go to: downloads History & DT - WW2 Ration CookingIn History and in DT this week we have been finding out more about rationing during WW2. In History we had the opportunity to cook a rationed recipe and in DT we looked at what the amounts of rationed food actually looks like!
Another week of home learning in Mandela Class. This week we have welcomed some children back into the classroom, whilst others have continued to work hard at home. Here are some of the highlights: Art: Illuminated LettersHistory: Starting a new unit on WW2STEM: making bridges strongerThe challenge this week - make two piles of books of the same height about 10cm apart. Put a piece of cardboard across the books. Add coins onto the cardboard until it falls down. How can you make your bridge stronger? What is the maximum number of coins that it will hold. Some of the results: SCience: Classification and fungi factfileWe started a new unit this week on Classification. First the children explored what classification was and grouped things according to whether they were animals, plants or fungi and microorganisms. Then they carried out a little research on Fungi and created a small factfile on them.
Another week of home learning in Mandela Class. This week we have all been working hard at home. Here are some of the highlights: Art: A directed drawing of a Bicycle
Geography: Researching one of the seven continentsEnglish: Writing a persuasive advert for our gadgetsScience: FossilsThis week in science was all about fossils. The children had a few tasks to complete exploring how fossils help scientists find out about dinosaurs and the ancestors of present day animals and humans. DT: Design EngineeringLast week in DT, we looked at what a design engineer was and some of the characteristics of a design engineer using a project from the Dyson Foundation. We followed on this week by working as design engineers to look at everyday objects around our house or school that we thought would be interesting to design differently. We used PMI (plus, minus, interesting) to explore what was good about an object, what was bad about it and what we thought could be changed about the object. |
