During DT this week, we began designing a bag based on the design criteria we had developed. We showed our designs using an exploded diagram. We then continued to practise running stitch, cross stitch and back stitch. The children are getting very confident with these stitches and are beginning to experiment with what they can do with them.

We continued to work on long division this week, recording the calculations in our books. Following this, the children were given the choice of using either long or short division to solve calculations, a lot of them chose short division for 1-digit divisors and long division for 2-digit divisors. We are so proud of how well our class have been working in maths over the half term. Good use of these learning gem:For our Textiles Unit in Art we have been studying the artwork of artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. We focused on his use of bold colour, perspective, line and shape. We will be using this artwork to influence us when creating textile wall hangings. After collecting ideas in our sketch books and drafting out a rough sketch we are now using wax crayon and watercolours to create wax resist paintings in his distinctive style. Here we are working on our paintings. Here are the finished wax resist paintings:Good use of these Learning Gems:Today we used our Editing Stations to improve our own work. We visited each station to help us improve the first draft of our chapters for our non-fiction books. It really made us think about our work and ways to improve it! Tomorrow we will start writing up or typing up our books in neat. Good use of these Learning Gems:In History and geography we have been learning about Nelson Mandela and South Africa. It is a topic we really enjoy and it has helped us write for a purpose in our English lessons. We know so much about his life - ask us anything! Sometimes it almost feels as though Nelson is with us in the classroom. Here is just a little bit of the work we've been doing in our Topic books! Good use of these Learning gems:This week was all about division in maths. On Thursday we continued to work on short division and on Friday we began learning how to use the long division method. Although the long division method was tricky to start off with, some of the children were very impressed with themselves by the end of the lesson when they could do it successfully! Good use of these learning gems:Over the last 2 weeks, we have started our new DT topic which is designing and making a bag. To start with, we sketched bags and labelled them with the main features. We also designed a questionnaire that we could give to the person we had decided to make a bag for, to ensure we were making something suitable for them. After writing our design criteria, we started to practise the stitches we might need to use when making our bags. So far we have worked on threading a needle, running stitch, cross stitch and casting off. An excellent start made by all children. Good use of these learning gems:Using our perspective design skills we designed and made our own press prints and created some lovely press print pictures! Firstly we came up with a design and scored our design onto the press print. Then we used our finished press prints, using the designs we scored onto our polystyrene tiles and printing ink to transfer the design onto paper as a repeated pattern. We were able to select from a range of colours and could use black or off white art paper to print on. The different backgrounds and paints gave very different effects - some made our eyes go funny! The best results were when the lines were scored deeply into the tile and the design was kept simple and clear. A great way of using our perspective drawing skills! Here are our finished designs: Well done everyone! Good use of these Learning Gems:Today, we checked that we recognised the meaning of words we had been learning over the past few weeks. I was really impressed with the speed at which the children were able to identify the French phrases and draw matching illustrations to show it. Good use of these learning gems:In Mandela Class, in addition to Guided Reading and ERIC each day, we meet 3 times a week for Book Club. We read in small groups a book which Mrs Matthews especially selects for us, she wraps it up as a surprise and asks us questions to promote discussion about what we have read. It is a really enjoyable time of the day. Group A are still reading Varjak Paw, they are really enjoying the book and feel it is just getting better and better! Group B are still reading Holes. They are really enjoying the book and how it jumps forwards and backwards in time. It is keeping them on their toes! Group C are still reading Millions the no-so-great train robbery. They are enjoying the book and find it really funny - especially as it's a bit rude in places! Group D have finished Boy in the Dress today! They really liked it and would highly recommend it to other KS2 readers. They are so excited to open their new mystery book next week!! Group E have almost finished their book Dragonory. They have really enjoyed the fact that it is a book of short stories and like the variety within the book. Good use of these Learning Gems: |
