We are all creating our own non-fiction information book about Nelson Mandela for Key Stage 2 children. We came up with our own success criteria based on the features of report writing we have been learning this term. This week we have been working on our first drafts of our non-fiction books. It has given us the chance to use all of the research we have been doing in our Topic lessons so far this term. This is an independent piece of work which gives us a chance to apply the skills and knowledge we have been focusing on in class.

This week the class were given more time to follow instructions to build the Meccano sets and use K'nex and Electric Kits. It was great to see the focus and determination of the children as they built their models. Some of the trickier Meccano ones are getting ever closer to being finished! The royal societyAlong with a number of other schools in the country, we have been selected by The Royal Society to help choose a winning book out of those they have shortlisted. We spent part of Friday afternoon, in our book club groups, looking at a couple of the books and recording what we thought about them. After we have had an opportunity to look at all 6 books, we will have to make a decision as a class about which one we would select as a winner. I think there are already some that stand out for the children! Good use of these learning gems:We continued to work hard on learning the long multiplication method this week. The children have quickly picked up this method and are setting it our really well in their books. We also started looking at the short division method. Which the class were very confident in using. We put this method to good use as we played a game. Good use of these learning gems:We started the unit by finding out more about the buildings designed by Norman Foster and recording our findings in our sketchbooks. We then learnt how to create one point perspective drawings and practiced the technique. Finally we produced some one point perspective drawings independently, going over the pencil design with sharpie and then colouring it in using pencil crayons. Good use of these Learning Gems everyone:We have been busy learning about holidays (en vacances) in French over the past few weeks. The children have learnt how to say a few phrases and today they practised writing those phrases, matching them to the English ones. Good use of these learning gems:In English we have been working really hard to produce our own display boards, with each group focusing on a different aspect of Nelson Mandela's life. We worked really well to independently organise our groups and work together to create an informative board, so visitors to our classroom can learn more about the great man himself! Fantastic work!! Good use of these Learning Gems:This week in maths, we were using the written methods for addition and subtraction to solve word and missing digit problems. We then moved on to learning the written method for multiplication. The children first started working on boards, getting used to how to set out this method before moving on to working more independently in their books. good use of these learning gems:We completed our work on Electricity this week by looking at the key events of electricity since 1600AD. The children had to do lots of measuring in order to get the events as accurate as possible. I was really pleased with the final results including some fantastic pictures to illustrate the facts. The children noticed that there was quite a lot of time between the 1st key event (William Gilbert first using the word electricity) and the 2nd one (Stephen Gray showing that electricity can flow through wires). Some were also surprised to find out the colour television has been around for less than 80 years! Good use of these learning gems:This week in English we are currently working really hard to produce our own display boards, with each group focusing on a different aspect of Nelson Mandela's life. We are focusing on 3 elements: using the Writer's Toolkit on our boards, working as a team and presenting our work clearly and neatly. Here we are hard at work: Mrs Matthews has given us some feedback so when we work on our boards again next week we can make some improvements. Here's what they look like so far: Watch this space for an update!Good use of these Learning Gems: |
