Today, we continued our investigation into pulse rates using a pulsilogium. To begin the lesson we worked in groups to add labels to the circulatory system - showing what we had remembered from last week. Then we worked in our groups from last week, using the pulsilogiums to match individual pulse rates. We repeated our testing at least twice and then found the average of our results before presenting the information in a bar graph.

This week we continued to practise our sewing skills. Some children completed sewing their button on to one side of felt whilst others moved on to sewing the felt together, first using a running stitch and then a back stitch. I was really impressed with the perseverance from many of the children, sticking with the sewing even when they got themselves into a pickle! Great use of these learning gems:
Our finished designs:GOOD USE OF THESE LEARNING GEMS:This week we started our Mystery Book Club. Mystery Book Club is when Mrs Matthews wraps up a book she has especially selected for each group to read. Everyone was excited to open up and read their new books! Good use of these Learning Gems:We started our science lesson today by acting out the circulatory system on our playground. We then checked our understanding of the circulatory system by finishing off some sentence openers. Finally, we began an investigation into heart rates by making a pulsilogium (which was invented by Santorio Santorio). Good use of these learning gems:Today in DT we started practising our sewing skills in readiness for sewing our soft toys in a few weeks time. The main focus today was to practise threading a needle, tying a knot and then sewing a button on to a piece of felt. Hopefully the children will be able to use this skill to sew on any buttons that come off their clothes in the future! great use of these learning gems:This week in maths we continued to look at the bar model to help us solve addition and subtraction problems. Once we had got to grips with how we could use it to solve word problems - including measure and time problems, we used the same method to help us solve missing angle problems in triangles, on a straight line, around a point and in quadrilaterals. GOOD USE OF THESE LEARNING GEMS:In PSHE we have been thinking about our wider community and considering what we are grateful for and putting ourselves in the shoes of others who are perhaps not as fortunate as we are. We read the book 'The Invisible' by Tom Percival which promoted lots of good discussions. GOOD USE OF THESE LEARNING GEMS:After lots of talk about what we had learnt in previous years about our body, we got started on learning about the circulatory system today - particularly focussing on the heart. We learnt some facts about the heart - identifying where it was in our body, what it is like inside and how it works in our body. The children then worked in groups to make a model of a heart, exploring how blood pumps in to the body through it. Good use of these learning gems: |
