Some of us took our learning outside and use paintbrushes and water to write words with split-vowel digraphs in.
Today in Phonics we made our learning hands on. We played a game of pick up sticks where we tried our hardest not not to move any other sticks when picking up the one we selected. We had to sort the words on the sticks into real and nonsense words. Some of us took our learning outside and use paintbrushes and water to write words with split-vowel digraphs in.

Today we celebrated our learning this term with a medieval day. We started the day with some medieval dancing. We listened to some traditional music and worked in groups to design our own dance-check out Seesaw to see our dances.
We then sat down to a medieval banquet where we tucked into to delicious goodies from the medieval period- eggs, bread and butter, cheese, fried plums. We burned off our banquet with a jousting competition, where we ad to reach the other side of the hall on our horse without getting caught by our opponent. This afternoon we had a West End Theatre company come to help us re-enact the story of 'George and the Dragon' through dance. We learnt different moves, routines and worked together with Amy. We were certainly puffed out by the end of the routine! Thank you to all of the effort with the costumes, the children all looked fantastic!! You have worked really hard on this topic Year 1! This week in MacArthur the children got the chance to make their own dragons using egg boxes. They used some great DT skills to create the dragon and then used their dragon to write instructions in literacy.
In Maths we have been learning about fractions, we have looked at halving shapes and numbers. This week we used pizzas and shared out pepperonis to work out half of a number. On Friday in art we looked at mark making and using different pencils for different effects. We drew our own gardens (some with dragons) and coloured them using oil pastels. Today was Mrs Matthews' Reading Raffle assembly - there are many books to win, if you read 5 times a week! Our Y1 winner was very pleased with his choice.
Welcome back after Christmas! Happy New Year to you all!
As our curriculum overview you received today stated our new topic is Dragons, Castles, Knights and Princesses. Today our Art was linked to the Story of the Princess and the Pea and we developed our painting skills using movement strokes to create the princesses bed. Check out Seesaw to see our paintings. Take a look at our role play area for this term. A few pictures from our lovely Christmas Lunch at school. We ate, sang, chatted and laughed. Thank you to our great cooks and lunchtime helpers.
In Year 1 today we had some special visitors in the form of animals! To develop this half terms topic we we very lucky to have Kimmy's Zoo come into school. Sarah & Amy brought in a selection of animals including a tortoise, chameleon, armadillo, skunk and snake! We learnt lots of interesting facts: *A chameleon goes puffy when angry and green when scared. *A tortoise is a herbivore which means it eats grass, leaves and flowers. *There are 10,000 different types of millipedes and they have about 600 legs. What a great experience for us today, here are some of our comments of the session "It was really fun" Max "I really liked the snake" Nixon "I felt happy seeing the animals" Lexie "It was really exciting" Ava In Art this week we have been developing our painting skills and mixing our own powder paint using our dip, dab, mix rhyme. We were making C shapes and had to ensure we held our paintbrush correctly.
In Maths we have been learning about 2D shapes, thinking about the properties. We were learning another name for a rectangle is oblong and we thought about unusual 2D shapes like oval and rhombus. We have also been learning to write numbers in words from one to ten. Some of them are very tricky but we have been working hard! We re-told the story of the Little Red Hen using actions in literacy, check out Seesaw if you haven't seen the video! Welcome back after our short half term, hope you all had a nice week off!
This term we are starting a topic on 'animals'. In literacy we are reading 2 books- 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes' and 'Handa's Hen' Our writing will be based on these books, we will be focusing on using our imagination and applying our punctuation skills. Our science is also linked to animals and we will be thinking about the structure of animals and sorting them into mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds. In PE we have started thinking about using balance and will be using the apparatus soon which we are really excited about. We have been enjoying our vets role play area this week. We have been taking patch for a walk, making the animals better and writing receipts. Well done to all the children that achieved our learning gems in the first half of the term! On Friday we celebrated 100 years since the end of World War 1. We were dressed in a sea of red, white and blue and were ready to celebrate with our flags & hats. We had a great afternoon singing, sharing food with our friends. Well done Year 1! |
