Although it wasn't easy to write down, the children did really well at explaining why 1 isn't classed as a prime number. Here is just one example

Today, we looked at some of the rules of divisibility so we could work out if a number was divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9. The children (and adults) were surprised to learn some of the rules - for example a number that is divisible by 3 will have a digit total which is a multiple of 3. Following this, we then looked at prime numbers. The children proved a number wasn't prime by explaining it in words as well as drawings - showing a really good understanding of prime numbers. ![]() Although it wasn't easy to write down, the children did really well at explaining why 1 isn't classed as a prime number. Here is just one example The following day we looked at square and cube numbers in readiness for using them in calculations with more than 1 operation. We began by looking at why they are called square and cube numbers by drawing squares and making a cube with small blocks and then went on to having a go at finding square numbers to 12x12 and cube numbers to 6x6x6. In DT we are designing and making fabric bags for faily members. In DT we our designing and making fabric bags for family members. Firstly we looked at different types of bags already available and together designed a questionnaire for our clients so we could find out what kind of bag they would like. Our questionnaire: Then we practised various sewing skills, including threading a needle and castling off, running stitch, back stitch and cross stitch. We used large needles and binka to start with and then made a little push using smaller needles and running or back stitch. We are doing really well with our stitching techniques: Good use of these Learning Gems:First we worked on common factors this week. Most of the children already knew what factors were and so they were quickly able to work out what common factors were. As well as finding common factors of numbers, they completed a definition grid, showing what they understood about them. We then looked at common multiples. We coloured in multiples on a 100 square first and then just used our multiplication knowledge to help us find other common multiples. good use of this learning gem:For our Textiles Unit in Art we have been studying the artwork of artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. We focused on his use of bold colour, perspective, line and shape. We will be using this artwork to influence us when creating textile wall hangings. After collecting ideas in our sketch books and drafting out a rough sketch we are now using wax crayon and watercolours to create wax resist paintings in his distinctive style. Here we are working on our paintings:Our finished Wax Resist Paintings:Good use of these Learning Gems:Firstly, we decided on our groups and then decided what paragraphs each person in the group was going to write. Then, we edited our paragraphs using the Quick Editing Station and wrote them up in neat for the display board. Afterwards, we worked on the rest of the display board, adding more detail, diagrams or photos and captions, fact boxes and other decorations to draw the reader in. Here are our final finished display boards: Good use of these Learning Gems:Today saw the first five children perform their poems to the rest of the class. In Mandela Class we are lucky enough to have Mr Harvey work with us to help a different group (each half term) to learn a poem off by heart and recite it to the rest of the class. This is a skill, which is not only part of the Year 6 expectations for reading, but is also a life skill which prepares the children for High School and beyond. It always amazes me how all different types of children respond to the task and the change which occurs in their confidence and ability in just 6 weeks. Well done! Good use of these Learning Gems:The children have been working hard on learning the long division method. First we did lots of practice on long division wipeable boards, so we could concentrate on the method rather than having to set the work out. To start with, the children were very unsure of this method but by the end of the lesson there were lots of smiles and realisation of how much easier it was to use this method rather than the short division method when the divisor was a 2-digit number. Once it had been mastered on whiteboards, the children worked in their books, learning how to set out this method whilst solving some calculations. Good use of these learning gems:This afternoon we invited parents and grandparents in to class to learn about the calculation methods we use in Y6. It was great to see how confident the children were with these methods, particularly with long division! Good use of these learning gems:Using our perspective design skills we designed and made our own press prints and created some lovely press print pictures! Firstly we came up with a design and scored our design onto the press print. Then we used our finished press prints, using the designs we scored onto our polystyrene tiles and printing ink to transfer the design onto paper as a repeated pattern. We were able to select from a range of colours to print with. The best results were when the lines were scored deeply into the tile and the design was kept simple and clear. A great way of using our perspective drawing skills! Our Finished Work:Good use of these Learning Gems:The class were really confident using the short division method today and those who knew their multiplication tables well were very quick to solve these calculations. They were also able to take on some of the reasoning challenges using their great understanding of the method. Well done Mandela Class! Good use of these learning gems: |
