This week we had our first STEM lesson (Science Technology Engineering and Maths).
We were given some skittles to arrange on a plate. We then carefully poured warm water onto the plate and watched what happened to the skittles. We found it fascinating to watch the pattern and colours change and we noticed that the skittles began to shrink and turn white. We discussed what was happening as a class and walked round and looked at each other's patterns. We enjoyed it so much that we are going to perform the experiment again next week but with 'giant' skittles and with cold water this time to see if we get different results. Great experiment Year 2! We had some biscuit themed fun in our Science lesson this week.
Our task was to see out of Digestive, Oreo, Bourbon and Fruit Shortcake biscuits, which was the best to dunk in 'a cup of tea'. We planned to do this by seeing how many dunks the biscuit could take before it fell apart. Most of us predicted that either the oreo or digestive would last the longest. After dipping the biscuits in our cups of warm water, we found that the fruit shortcake was the worst to dunk as this fell apart after just one dunk. We found that the best biscuit to dunk was the bourbon as it lasted a huge dunks into the cup! So if in doubt.....go for a bourbon!! Believe it or not, this week in Nightingale class we have made Christmas cards....on a particularly hot and 'un-Christmassy' day!
We created our festive designs ready to be ordered and sent off to be made ready to send out to our family and friends at Christmas! In our maths lessons this week we have been look at using the part-whole method to work out how many tens and ones in numbers. We have written numbers on whiteboards, used number cards and counters and cubes to show how many tens and ones in different numbers.
We have also been looking at Less than (<), More than (>) and equal to with numbers up to 50. We have learnt that the 'crocodile' always eats the bigger number. Over the past few days the children have all settled in well to Year 2. They have already been working hard with some Place Value in maths and writing some short poetry and about their summer holidays in Literacy. I am already impressed with their lovely handwriting!
And just like that......it's end of term. Today we have had lots of fun nail painting, playing games, getting glittery tattoos, fun in the wildwood and on the field and party food!
A very strange year for us all...but the children have just smiled their way through it and carried on fantastically. I am so proud of each and every one of them. Have a great summer Year 2 - I am sure I will see you down the corridor in September! Good luck xx Today in our maths, we have been measuring capacity. We compared how full of water different containers were by using vocabulary such as 'a quarter full' 'half full' and 'three-quarters full' We also estimated how many cups of water would fill different containers......before seeing if our estimations were correct!
