In maths this week we started our new unit of Height and Length. We learnt that there is 100 centimetres in 1 metre. We then measured a number of different objects in the classroom to see if they were longer or shorter than 1 metre. We even measured ourselves to see if we too were longer or shorter than 1 metre. We then had to sort them objects and ourselves into 'More than 1 metre' and 'Less than 1 metre' hoops. We all had lots of fun!

For part of our Art unit, this week we done some leaf printing. We firstly went outside to collect some different shaped and sized leaves. We then took them back into the classroom where we painted different colour over their patterns. Next, we then turned the leaves over onto some paper and gently pushed down to create a print. We then repeated this step with different leaves and different colours. This week was our last week of learning about Fractions in our Maths lessons. We have been learning how to count fractions, recognize unit and non-unit fractions and ending in a fractions Kahoot quiz!
We learnt that a unit fraction is when the Numerator (top number) is 1, such as 1/2, 1/3, 1/4. We also learnt that a Non-unit fraction is when the Numerator is more than 1, such as 2/3, 3/4. We ended our Fractions unit with a class Kahoot quiz which we really enjoyed. We worked in our table teams and even thought of our own team name. We all done brilliantly, discussing our answers as a team and then holding up the corresponding colour and shape card for our answers. The scores were VERY close but the winning team was 'DJ crushers'!. This week in our maths we have continued with our fractions work. We have been recognising different fractions, sorting fractions and finding 1/3 of amounts.
We found 1/3 of amounts by using counters and sharing them equally into 3 parts of a piece of card - just like we did last week with 1/2 and 1/4. We also played a game our table teams in which we were given a set of shapes which had been shaded. We had to work out if the shape had been shaded into 1/2, 1/4, 1/3 or 3/4. We had to discuss as a team which fraction we thought it was showing and then sort the shapes into the corresponding Hula-hoops at the front of the classroom. It was lots of fun and we did really well. Take a look..... This week in our Art we have been making our own models out of clay. We had to roll, ball and pinch the clay in our hands to make the shape of the model we wanted. We then used different tools such as rolling pins, plastic knives and cutters to make imprints and other designs onto our clay.
We had some great models from cupcakes and minions to dragons, dinosaurs and even the Eiffel Tower! Great art work Year 2! Take a look at some of our creations...... This week has been our first week back to school after the Easter holidays and we have kicked the new term off with our new maths unit....Fractions!
This week we have been looking at making equal groups, halves (1/2) and quarters (1/4). We have found half of different amounts by choosing a number card and then sharing cubes out between a coloured piece of card which had been split into two halves. We rhen counted how many cubes in each half to find what 1/2 of the amount was. Later in the week, we repeated the same activity, but finding 1/4 of amounts and sharing cubes between a piece of card which had been split into four quarters. Take a look at us busy at work...... In our Science our topic is 'Healthy Me'. Today, we have been looking at what keeps us happy and healthy. We watched a lovely video of other children telling us what made them happy - please link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6z-yZwfS5k We then created our own mind maps of all the things that make us happy and then chose our favourite thing to write on a poster, just like the children in the video did. The children wrote some lovely things! Take a look...... During our first week back at school after lockdown, we have been looking at the book 'The Rainbow Fish' and carrying out lots of different activities to link with this.
In maths we have created a tally and bar chart to show the different coloured scales on the rainbow fish, we have made fish pictures using both 2D and 3D shapes. We have created symmetry starfish - in which we drew patterns on one side of a starfish and had to make sure the half was a mirror image. In our literacy, we have watched videos of sea creatures and then described them using wow words. We have written acrostic poems in which we chose a sea creature and wrote its name down the page and used different adjectives for each letter to describe the animal. We have also had crafty afternoons, making our own CD Rainbow fish, tissue paper fish with shiny scales, and Mothers day cards and gifts This week has been the last week of most of us learning from home and the children both at home and at school have been busy with their learning. We have been learning more about Florence Nightingale and from the information we found we created a time line of her life. We learnt that Florence was awarded many medals throughout her career for all the amazing work she did. So we designed our own for her - with some brilliant ideas!
In our maths we have continued learning about 2D and 3D shapes and have been identifying vertices, sides and faces. We have continued with our 'healthy me' topic in Science and this week we have been looking at healthy and unhealthy foods and the importance of eating a balanced diet. We then designed our own healthy-balanced meal. I would like to say a HUGE WELL DONE to both the children who have been coming into school and those at home - you have all been AMAZING! Well to all the parents/carers you have been fantastic too at being home-school teachers!!! Take a look at some of the photos from this weeks learning.... We have had a great start to the new half term! We have now started lots of new units. Our main topic unit is 'Florence Nightingale'. We began the week with some History of Florence Nightingale's life. We learnt about her early life and how she became a Nurse. We learnt that her parents named her after the place she was born, in Florence, Italy. We also learnt that Florence's parents were not too happy when she told them she wanted to go and train to be a Nurse.
The following day in our Art lesson, we watched a video which taught us how to draw Florence Nightingale, step-by-step...we had some fantastic results! In Maths, we began our new unit of 2D and 3D shapes. We named shapes, counted how many sides and vertices they had, drew our own 2D shapes and even looked at some symmetry! Our new Science unit it 'Healthy Me' and we spoke about all the different things we can do to keep our bodies clean and fit. We also spoke about all the different foods we can eat to keep our bodies healthy. We drew a picture of ourselves and then wrote all these different things around it. Some of the children even decided to lie down on a huge piece of paper and asked an adult to draw around them before writing all the different things around the life-size body - this looked brilliant! Lots of us are looking forward to our weekly zoom session later this evening. This week it is a Quiz! Keep up the super work Year 2! |
