During our Science lesson this afternoon, we were learning about passing on germs and how we can prevent this by washing our hands regularly. We were all asked to put our heads down, and see if we could feel anything. Mrs Tubby then came along and 'sneezed. on the back of our necks (of course, this was just a spay bottle filled with some warm water). It was funny but rather disgusting! We then thought about how far the 'snot' from the 'sneeze' would travel...as many of us touched the back of our necks and then unknowingly touched our mouths, faces etc. As well as talking about the importance of washing our hands, we also spoke about how important it is to cover our mouths and noses when we sneeze and cough, to stop germs spreading. Mrs Tubby then put some 'snot' (pink hand soap) into 2 children's hands, and then asked them to go and shake everyone in the class' hands.....to see how far the germs were spread. It was horrid and we all made sure we washed our hands thoroughly afterwards We also learnt that when washing our hands, we should sing/hum the tune of 'Happy Birthday' twice over.......then we know we have washed our hands thoroughly enough!!........Happy hand washing!

This morning, we were lucky enough to have Clare come into visit us. Clare is Isla's Auntie and works as a Nurse. Clare came into talk about what her job involves, and also spoke to us about some of the similarities and differences of being a nurse during Florence Nightingales time and being a nurse today.
Clare also brought in a very clever machine, which shows how much bacteria is on your hands. Clare put some special germ gel to represent bacteria onto each of our hands and we put them in the machine under a special lamp which made the 'bacteria' glow. We then washed our hands with soap and water and put our hands back under the lamp to see if we had washed all of the 'bacteria' away....some of us needed to wash our hands again! We all had lots of fun this morning and Clare taught us lots of new and interesting things! In fact after Clare had gone, we had a further conversation about being doctors and nurses and many of the children have decided that after listening to Clare, they would quite like to be a doctor or nurse!! We would like to say a huge THANK YOU! to Clare for coming into see us today - you were fantastic, and all the children (and adults!) really enjoyed it! Today was Mrs Matthews' Reading Raffle assembly, there are many books to win, if you read 5 times a week! Our Y2 winner was very pleased with his choice.
In our Design and Technology lesson this afternoon, we looked back at our final finger puppet designs, and used to help us create a 'moc-up' or practise of our final finger puppets, which will be making during next weeks lesson, using felt.
Over the past weeks in our D&T lessons, the children have been learning to sew, and their practise really paid off today. Sewing is a tricky skill to learn, and requires patience.....which the children showed lots of too! Well done class Lincoln....we can't wait to see your final finger puppets next week! We would like to say a big Thank-you to the PTA. They gave each class some money to spend on something for the children or classroom. Class Lincoln chose some new cushions and a bookshelf for our reading corner....we think they look great in their new home!.....
I would like to wish you all a very HAPPY NEW YEAR and to welcome you back to school.
I hope you all had a lovely Christmas break. The children have had their first day back of the Spring term....and there are raring to go! This term, our Topic will be 'Florence Nightingale'. We had our first lesson learning all about who she was and what she did today.....and the children listen very well as they were able to remember lots about her life! As you may be aware....the children recently earned their class treat by gaining all 20 marbles.
They have chosen to have a party afternoon in which they would like to wear their own clothes, bring in party food, toys, teddies and watch a DVD. This will take place this coming Monday afternoon (2nd). Children may bring in their own clothes which they can change into after lunch. They can bring in some party food, such as biscuits, crisps, popcorn, fruit, sausage rolls etc - 1 item will be fine.. They may also bring in a teddy, toy or game and DVD they may like to watch (if you are ok for them to do so). If you have any question, please let me know. Many thanks In our RE, we have been learning about different religious celebrations. We are currently leartning about the Hindu celebration, Diwali. This year, Diwali started on Sunday 27th October, and as we learnt, the celebrations last for 5 days.
Diwali is also know as the 'Festival of Light' as people light small oil lamps and put them around their houses, shops and streets. In our RE lesson last week, we made salt dough tea-light holders. Mrs Tubby then 'cooked ' them so they went hard and kept their shape. Today, we were able to decorate our tea-light holders using lots of brightly coloured paint. We all took our time, and concentrated hard.....and we think our tea-light holders look great! Mrs Tubby has told us that once they are completely dry, we will be given a tea-light to put in it. On Monday afternoon, as part of our Geography, we carried out a traffic survey.
We put on our Hi-vis jackets, and along with our clipboards and tally charts.....off we went to count the traffic! We stood in a line on the path behind the lay-by, and each time a vehicle passed, we had to record it in the correct box. As expected. the most popular vehicle which passed were cars. We also recorded seeing a number of vans and trucks, 3 cyclists, a bus, and 3 pedestrians. We were rather hoping to see a tractor....but no luck! Once we had carried out our traffic survey for about 15 minutes, we went back into the classroom to count up our results, and to warm up! This afternoon, we combined our Literacy topic of the 'Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' and our recent learning of following instruction, to make our own sandwiches.... First, we placed our two slices of bread on our chopping board. Next, we used a knife to spread some butter on each slice. Then, we placed our filling on one of our slices of bread, carefully cutting and fillings as necessary. Next, we placed our second slice of bread on top of the fillings to make our sandwich Then, we used our knife again to carefully cut our sandwich in half. Thank you to Mrs Wray for helping us with our sandwich making! |
